Cleaning old barbies

Kathy
by Kathy
I purchased a tub of 50 old barbies at a auction. The legs are all soft plastic and torsos hard plastic. The legs are all sticky! Need ideas on cleaning legs.

I would try Murphy's Oil soap.

Mild Dish Soap and patience . Soak them a few at a time and use a semi soft scrubbie , like Scotchbrite to get to the tough parts . You might want to grab a wide tooth comb for the hair .

@@Kathy , I hope it works , Ajax is usually what I would use for anything requiring a long time cleaning process . It's a thinner dish liquid and mixed with water is is less foamy than say Dawn . And Bonus is it is very cheap and does the job , under a buck for a bottle : }'s

Apparently this is a sign the plastic is disintegrating and some articles mention the possibility of hazardous toxins leaching out of the plastic. Here are a couple links you might find helpful/informative and you can probably find more if you search "sticky doll disease," which is the name that has been coined for dolls with this affliction. http://collectdolls.about.com/library/weekly/aa081800e.htm http://collectdolls.about.com/library/weekly/aa082400a.htm

I would try putting them in dish washer on top rack only. This works on many random items that are heavily soiled.

twinpines.com. They have everything you need to clean up old dolls. They are also extremely helpful. I wouldn't use anything else.
