Does anyone know anything about hydroponic gardening

Question

I saw an episode of Emeril Lagasse in Florida where a restaurant used hydroponically grown herbs and lettuces and Emeril took the viewers on a tour of the green house where the food is grown. I want to make my own hydroponic garden next year. Where would I go to purchase the tubes the food is grown in? Does anyone know?

I looked into doing this at one point but the costs of setting up a hydroponic system and the work involved in maintaining it was more than I was willing to invest in raising some plants to eat when doing raised beds gave me more room, more plants, more production and was less time and expense.

Lots of growers in Florida use hydroponic tower systems. If you do a Google search for that you'll find a lot of places that sell them. Your local nursery may sell them as well, and would be a good source of advice in setting up a system.

Are there other materials besides 'Plastics PVC CPVC' something like glass? that may be turned into the growing towers? Ceramics or Terracotta tubes, Pipes? Thinking plastics leach out into the water/soil.. wondering about PBA's?
