Thermafoil cabinet melted!

Years ago we replaced our cabinets with thermafoil doors. Now I've noticed the glue is drying up on the frames and some foil on the doors is also melting and becoming misshapened. Any ideas how to fix this? We don't want to redo the kitchen now, but can I reheat the doors to get the foil back to its original shape?

  • @Joan once the plastic begins to fail there is really not much you can do to repair it. My concern is why is the surface appear to be melting? Is it near a stove or heat source? Putting any additional heat on the plastic coating will do nothing other then to loosen the plastic from the surface of the wood. One low cost method is if its the doors, you can purchase new replacements on line at many on line cabinet stores. If its the framing of the cabinet you would be best served to use a sharp utility knife and cut off the area that Is coming loose. Then using autobody filler fill in over the removed material to bring it level to the surface of the remaining plastic surface then paint using a high gloss paint that matches the color of the cabinets.

Heat takes off the thermafoil. I would take off the entire plastic, sand the door with a very fine grid sandpaper and clean it thoroughly. Then use a very good oil based primer, maybe 2 thin coats but let the 1 coat dry very well. Then buy yourself some really good paint, there is some special paint for kitchen cabinets and you can get that in any color you like. Use some very good sponge paint rollers and apply several thin coats, but make sure each coat is try before applying another coat. In between coats, if there are any uneven areas use your fine grid sandpaper and apply soft circular pressure to smooth out the area before applying the next coat. You will need at least 2-3 top coats.

Thanks for your help. Yes, the area is above my toaster oven which produces heat. I will check about a replacement door. For the framing, I think I will try regluing using super glue or epoxy. Thanks again.
