Salvaged Window Table

#Bestof2012 #Recycle

My husband took a salvaged window and made it into a table for me! Room inside for storage or decorative items. He did an amazing job. No plans, just from his head!

A really neat idea but I wonder about safety? I am not familiar with glazing-does this strengthen the glass so it is shatter resistant?

Hubby here to respond to a couple posts. The safety issue is a legitimate concern, as it is with any glass table. However, manufactured glass tops use tempered glass designed to both strengthen the glass and affect the way the glass shatters if it breaks. Since my table is made with a standard window, the risk is higher. Throw in the fact that the original purpose was a vertical application (not horizontal) and that the glass becomes brittle with age, some thought should be given to ...»
the amount of abuse the table will get. Glazing is just the product that holds each window pane in place...think clay that is rolled between the palms into a snake-like shape, then pushed into the wood that separates each pane to form a triangular seal. Technology now allows that to happen in a tube and application is with a calking gun. Brilliant!

As for finding wood and windows, you can check your local Craigslist, or just scavenge around farms for abandoned structures. Sometimes you can pick up an old fence that is being replaced curbside. The windows are more difficult and may involve tracking someone down at a demolition site. Pallets are a good source, too, but can be difficult to break apart and still salvage the wood.

Hope that helps and thanks for the questions!

Debbi I want to score some more windows, too! We're patiently waiting to find some on the curb!

I love this idea....but I too would be concerned with safety. I think It would look stunning made as a shadow box with shelves but not as a table unless the glass was swapped out or plexiglass was tacked on top.
