Looks like an ideal location for a pergola. It would make it feel more like a room. -
Hi Wendy, I was just looking at a DIY stacked stone fire pit; they started out with the same situation you're in and look what they did! http://www.hometalk.com/440318/building-a-st... -
Outside of a market umbrella, the least expensive shade I know of is a solar sail, and that would work for your patio. Like umbrellas, solar sails come in different colors; so they can be worked in with your decorating colors. -
Wendy, I didn't see just how much space you have! You certainly could consider putting a pergola over the slab to make that into an outdoor living space. If you decide to add a firepit, you should check your community's rules on firepits because they may require a certain distance from the house. It looks like you are on a slope so a water feature would certainly be nice. Who says it all needs to be done at once? -
Take care of a firepit! They scare me on wood. Our young neighbors have one and they burn it late at night with sparks going everywhere in the dry weather we have. Even though it is located some 30+ feet from my house, that spark does not know to stay in it's yard! -
Thanks everyone! What I would love is to figure out some way to make a small entertainment area in the further part of the yard, away from the house, not on the deck/patio where the fire pit would be included, , but I am not sure how to make it flow or the placement of it, it starts to slope closer to the hill. We have a play set to the right, so not sure if placing an area towards the center of the yard would be crowded looking, leaning towards the left side like I posted pics of. ...» -
So would the pergola go over the slab part (part of the slab is partially covered) or deck part? -
It could go either place, but if it were me, I would put it over the deck. It looks to me like it could come right out from under the overhang above grill. Then you could even consider some outdoor curtains for the option of more privacy. -
A pergola would make a great addition, but I agree with Becky that a solar sail would be the least expensive short-term option for getting you some shade to make that a more useable space. -
As far as the pergola, I would put it over the slab. The slab looks so plain. If you used the same wood as the deck it would tie the two areas together. It would also give you some shade right out of the house and you could make it a living space with outdoor furniture. You might even extend the "railing" just a bit to make a little entry to the patio area.
