Stairway runner

We recently had our tri-level upstair flooring and stairs refinished after removing 25 year old carpeting. The enclosed staircase leading to the upper level bedroom area is oak with pine risers. The risers look rather motley. I am looking for ideas to make the staircase more attractive. I would appreciate any thoughts and ideas.

Painting would be the least expensive. But seen the tile and love the look of it. If you like the tile look but can't afford tile, look into peel and stick tile. Even a heavy wallpaper if you can find it.

I have seen the fronts covered with anagalyptic wall paper. It comes in several different patterns and is a thick paper that will cover a multitude of sins- or staple holes! it can be painted but have also seen it just left the white it comes in. You can cut it with scissors and use a heavy duty glue instead of wallpaper paste. I would think sealing it with a satin poly would make it more durable as well.
