My mother bought this flower and there wasn't an information tag in the planter. Does anyone know what this flower is called?

Definitely a crossandra. You will have to move it indoors for the winter.

Correct name. Mine is in a sunny window, which makes some leaf stalks grow taller than the flowers, so I cut them off and put in water. They don't 'drink' well when left alone, put I put slits in the stems with an exacto knife and now have lots of roots to start new plants.

This plant is a tropical plant which goes by the local name kanakambaram in south India. Though the flower does not have much of a smell It is used by the garland industry to make garlands for weddings and other festivities. Once the plant has seeds (they turn dark brown when dried) take a seed pod and drop it in a cup of water. Wait for 10-20 seconds and watch it explode. The seed pods are shaped like tiny boats.
