Build shelves

I have a electric fire place I would like to build shelves to go on the sides of it would this be that something that can be done.

Sure, just mind the temps coming from the fire place and how it affects your shelving material.

Always helpful to insulate with a heat proofing material, then butt your wooden bookshelves into it making sure the measurements allow for this protection. After the shelving is installed, use a cool trim to disguise the join edge and the other 3 edges as well.
