Hand sand the whole door so the new paint will adhere. In the areas with the chipping do some extra sanding to smooth out the area. For paint, I would use and enamel and if it is a steel door try to use an oil based enamel.

Its important to use an exterior rated paint...glossier finishes will be easier to clean but more challenging to apply. Here a small roller will come in handy. Light sanding first then wipe everything with a "tack" cloth this will remove the sanding dust.
  • Also, don't paint the door while it is in the direct sun or feels warm/hot to the touch, especially if it is metal.
  • i would recomend and industrial metal surface filler,, sand,, prime,, then paint,,,, but like dan says make sure the temp is right especialy for exterior doors or frames
  • also be sure to wipe down the door after each coat and especially after sanding, with a paint thinner or such in order to get the best finish!!

Hello Joy, 1st I would remove the door and place it on saw horses in a shaded area, this give you a better way to work. Lightly sand as the others have said. For areas with chips use a spot body filler in them. You will find this at any auto parts store. It will adhere to metal surface very well. After sanding use a damp cloth to remove and dust. damp with water for water based paint, for oil based paint use Mineral Spirits. I agree with KMS use a small foam roller, this will give you the best finish, "no brush strokes"
