I am looking at washing machines, Should I get a front loader or top loader? What brand do you like? Sears has this fun color! Boy have things changed.

    I LOVE my whirlpool front loaders. I've heard from more than one friend who has LG that they are having repair issues earlier than expected on their machines, and I always stay away from Frigidaire because of issues I've had with their refrigerators and dishwashers, although I have no experience with their washers/dryers, it has left a sour taste from their other products.

    I love to look at all the fun colors and new extras too, but when it came time to replace my washer this year I went with an HE Maytag top loader in white. Front loaders don't seem to air/dry out as well and I chose HE for energy efficiency. I have all Maytag appliances and I love them. So far I have no complaints. When you get rid of your old washer check with your electric co-they picked mine up and gave me $50.

      Bought my first washer at 21 years of age, it was a refurbished Maytag, used it through 2 kids and it died at 23 years. Bought a new one, another Maytag, it lived for 20 years. I now have my third Maytag, bought new 22 years ago. Hope I don't need another, but if I do, it will be another white, top loading knob turning Maytag, if they still make them. The more fancy stuff, the more to go wrong.

    We have had the Frigidaire Affinity series set (both front-loaders) for a couple of years now and could not be more pleased with their performance. Having said that, the washer door gasket never seems to dry out and as such, we are constantly battling a black mildew issue on the large door gasket itself where the moisture collects. This may or may not be an issue limited to some front loaders. I suspect we had it on the top-loaders as well except it was always below the basket where we could never see it. We pretty much have to keep the door open when we aren't using it so it can dry out. I would ask the "mildew" question on any style of front-loader you are considering purchasing.

    Thank you all for the information, I have always heard that Maytag was good & I have Whirlpool now & have been happy with it. Hewitt, I have heard also that others have had a mildew issue with the front loaders, especially the ones with a light in them.

    Lee Anne.....we recently purchased a High Efficiency(low water technology) Kenmore top load washer and are very happy. It doesn't have the tall agitator column in the center and it does a great job. It is also "Energy Star" rated. The salesperson at Sears did comment about the seal problem on front load machines. Kenmore.....made by Whirlpool. Gary

    I love my Samsung front loaders. They are anti-vibration so no rattling around. I have them on my second floor so that's important! Love the colored ones but went white (to save money). But of course, I'm thinking of painting or decaling mine!

    I just bought a new washer last week. I was having trouble making the same decision-top load or front load. I also wasn't sure about the ones without an agitator. I bought a GE top loader that has an agitator. It is an HE model. I am very satisfied with how well it cleans and how quiet it is. It lets me select the water level needed or I can let it decide how much water it needs for the load. I love it so far! Good luck!

    I would love something in Red - and stacking...laundry room is small - and just not working for me...might have to bust down a wall to make it more efficient!! I can afford to lose a foot from my sewing room to make it bigger - husband is going to love this!!

    I remember my front loader purchases well. It was so exciting! The first thing I did was to investigate reviews. It pays to know what to expect with given models. I ended up with a Sears Kenmore set because their warranty was really awesome. I've been happy ever since! Mine are deep cranberry. :) Donna

    We have a Frigidaire front loader at work and it has the mold issue as well. Had a front loader for years and when it was time to purchase new, went back to top loader. I have back issues and getting the laundry out always seemed such a pain, literally. Even went with a top loading dryer. Plus, I like to soak every now and again and that's much better done in a top loader. I did love the cleaning ability of the front loader though.

    About a year ago we purchased a Whirlpool front load. I HATE IT! You cannot close the door because it will stink! This is a common problem with all front loaders. Ask yourself, "why do you have to wash your washing machine once a month...run with no clothes on the "clean" cycle (yes, it has its own clean cycle) using 1/3 cup bleach or special "clean your front load washer tablets" made by Tide...and probably others by now!" My new "energy saving" dishwasher stinks too! Service tech said "it holds water in the bottom to keep seals from drying out". I have never heard such BS in my life! I should "buy jet dry product so my dishes will get dry"! Over the weekend I purchased a dish drainer...it is easier, quicker, takes less time, energy, worry and less products to wash up a few dishes! I have to wash pots and pans anyway, so not much work to wash up a few plates, forks and knives!

    Ummmm, would it scare you to know my washing machine is outside? LOL I live in the Caribbean so it's not as weird here as it sounds in the states. :) And I have a front loader and LOVE it.

    Like Jeanette S. I also have a Whirlpool and I hate mine too! They rattle and they have to be "cleaned" with a pricey cleaner once a month. F.Y.I. they have a bigger footprint also so be aware of that. I have to remove a cupboard now to make space for them and me! I hope it's just my brand because I do like the gentleness on the fabrics and they are almost dry when they come out so you know it saves energy but I can't hang anything on the walls and I'm scared to be in there when it's spinning.....the whole room shakes!

    I am leaning towards a top load due to the mildew issues. I want one that does not vibrate too much. Space Between, I will be happy to come to the Caribbean and put mine outside as well!!! LOL

    I have a front loader. It handles ex large loads wonderfully but my clothes come out a tangled mess and the dryer doesn't get the wrinkles out either. I'd go back to a top loader next time.

    I had front loaders. I never really cared for them. When the time came I went back to an extra large top loader. I do not regret my decision. Front loaders are not for me, been there now over it!

    Lee Anne, I have a Whirlpool front loader... new in 2010. I have had no real problems with it. I have a cloth I stick in the door to leave it open so it dries out in between washes and that seems to avoid a lot of problems. I love having the pedestals and not having to bend over to pull things out.

    I was VERY excited when the washer/dryer that came with my house finally pooped out (8 years ago). I bought a Kenmore front loader HE. Got the set. Spent extra $ for the cuter ones. I DESPISE them. Seriously, I am just waiting for them to die so that I can go back to a top loader. The door of the washer MUST be kept open at ALL times or the smell will KNOCK YOU OUT when you do open it. The drainage holes in the gasket are ABOVE the place where the water collects - so they are totally useless. The brain in my dryer has been broken since day one - it can ONLY be set for 45 minutes (no shorter, no longer). and the WORST part is that there is a spot on the lint trap that catches clothes with straps (tank tops, overalls, etc.) and holds on to them until the rest of the garment twists, and twists, and twists as the dryer goes around. . . Many times it just keeps twisting till the material actually breaks. I have lost at least a dozen articles of clothing. . . ugh. Really, unless they can assure you that you WON'T have an issue with water collecting in the washer - don't get one. If you are the kind of person who can commit to diligently wiping out and drying the gasket after each load of laundry (i certainly am NOT :)! then go for it! -- oh, i never let my washer door be closed - it is always open - and it NEVER dries out on it's own.

    I have had a Maytag top loader for years & some of those yrs were living on a farm. You talk about dirty clothes & coveralls!! I will always buy Maytag for durability & no front load for me....now that I'm older & retired, the less stooping the better. And why buy something that already has a known problem of mildew in the door????

    I had a Samsung front loader that was awful!! After 27 (yes TWENTY-SEVEN) repairs it was finally certified a lemon...and replaced with an awesome HE Top Loader!

    WHEW - lots of cons re: front loaders! We bought Maytag Epic Z front loading washer & matching dryer 2 yrs. ago. Our laundry "closet" is located upstairs so the repairman who said our old washer would cost $400 to fix, recommended that we install a thick piece of MDF and screw it down to the floor. In addition we added a piece of the rubber stuff like you put under rugs to keep them from "walking". That helped tremendously in absorbing sound and lessening the shimmying. As to front-loading performance - I've NEVER had an odor issue but I do leave the door open a few inches. That honestly just isn't a big deal to me. Also, my husband HATES fabric softner (says it makes him itch) so I put white vinegar in where the fabric softner area and everything comes out just fine. So . . . . . .I know my opinion is the minority but I'm perfectly happy with mine. Bear in mind you do have to use detergents & any other products that are labeled HE for the HIGH EFFICIENCY appliances.

    Our laundry is in our bathroom so we chose to go with a stacking pair to make the best use of our space. We have LG's 2140 washer and dryer pair and so far, so good!

    I went from top to front, and I'm really sorry. That mold issue is a bear (softener is the big culprit). After having a real odor issue with my clean clothing, I removed the detergent tray and took a flashlight and looked in the tray chamber and nearly had a panic attack!! All that mold was getting into my laundry making it stink!! The bottom of the rubber gasket on the door opening is also a gag inducing gunk catcher!! I finally solved it by using a new toilet brush to clean the detergent chamber with soapy bleach, and thoroughly removing and cleaning the tray, then running 2 hot bleach cycles. Now I remove, rinse and drain the tray after each wash (luckily I have a deep sink right next to the machine), and always leave the door open. It's been two months and everything has remained clean with no further bleaching or scrubbing. Unfortunately, your laundry room will never have that "designer look" that they like to sell you with these machines because you'll always have that gaping hole of the washer showing.

    LOVE my front loader. Never had mold or odor issues EVER. Have had one for about 12 years. Really saves the wear and tear on my clothes and lots less detergent and water. Couldn't be happier!

    We have Kenmore front loader. Sears has a lot of brands so you can compare. I am in a wheelchair, so front loader was what I had to have, but we went brand shopping. Kenmore had the best bang for the buck for us. My husband is the type person who dries the inside of the shower (really!) and he dries the washer door and the rubber seal every time I use the washer. So no odor problems there for me.

    I just had a long talk with a couple of repair guys who contract with Sears to fix appliances. I asked how the new front load machines are since they are being pushed as energy efficient and do such a great job of cleaning with less soap/water and supposedly are better on fabric.. I was really surprised to see the look on their faces when I asked. " Off the Record " ? they said... " I wouldn't own one, they said they advise friends and family to find a Late 1990's model top loader.. lol they said the front loaders don't clean very well, need to usually be adjusted to use more water than they are set up for or the soap won't come out and the bearings go out all the time because the shaft the drum is attached to has too much stress on it because it's horizontal rather than vertical... makes sense.. I been thinking I'd like to get a pair because they are cool looking and I'd heard what a great job they do.. Apparently NOT..

    I loved the water saving feature of the front end loader so I probably bought one of the first front end load washers in the late 90's. Maytag Nepture lasted about 12 years. It originally had a problem with water collecting but Maytag provided a free upgrade to fix it. My Maytag Neptue dryer is still operational.

    I finally gave up and replaced my Kenmore front load machine after numerous repairs. I found out the all the bells and whistles on these machines equal very expensive repair bills. I decided I could replace a top load machine every four years for what I was paying to repair my other.

    A couple years ago, I was making the same decision....whether to buy top loader or front loader. Before making my purchase, I did a lot of research and it seems people either love front loaders or hate them--no in between. I also concluded no brand of front loader seems to be immune to mildew issues. I first bought a Samsung front load washer/dryer set. Overall, Samsung was getting pretty good reviews at that time. I really, really liked it but just my luck, I had repeated mechanical issues with the washer within 90 days. After 4 service calls in less than a month, I returned the set. I wasn't particularly happy with Samsung's customer service (and I was LIVID with the retailer I had purchased the Samsung from--but that's another story) so I went somewhere else and bought a Whirlpool Duet front loader set. Whirlpool Duet seems to be one of the most popular brands/models of front loaders, but also seems to have a high rate of consumer complaints of mildew problems too. In my research, I did find there are some things that seem to increase the probability of getting mold...mainly liquid detergents and liquid fabric softeners. Apparently even HE safe liquid detergents and fabric softeners contain oils that coat the interior of the washer drum and seal, preventing the washer from ever drying out completely. I only use powder detergent and only 1-2 tablespoons, even for a large, very dirty load. (I've been thinking about making my own powdered laundry soap from one of the many tutorials on the internet.) I never use liquid fabric softener (but I have recently started using Purex Crystals, which apparently contain no oils). The manufacturers recommend you run a cycle with a washer cleaner like Affresh once a month but I have only done it maybe 3 times in 2 years. However, I do wash at least 2 white loads a week and use heavy liquid chlorine bleach (probably more than what is good for our clothes, the environment, or our health--but mold isn't good for our health either). I never leave wet clothes in the washer. After I finish doing laundry, I don't bother to wipe the door seal/gasket dry but I do always leave the washer door wide open (not just cracked). Whenever I think about it, I check the folds of the gasket for hair, threads, lint or anything that can possibly trap moisture. I also pull the detergent tray completely open to dry out when I'm done with the washer. I live in hot, humid Florida but fortunately, my laundry room is quite large and I have good air circulation in there so I think that helps dry the washer out and keep the mold at bay. I'm a consumer who is very pleased with my front load washer and (so far) I have zero mold problems. If you are willing to take a few preventative measures (and maybe change some of your laundry habits) to guard against mold, you will probably be really happy with a pretty front loader too.

    I was thinking about buying a front loading machine, but when I realized you had to buy the bottom parts for them to sit on and the extra added expense...No! I went for the top loading ones. Also, think about if you want to throw something in (while washing) not able to because water will come out or door won't open. I am always seeing things to throw in after washing has started.     When buying a New washer there are some things to consider.#1 How many people are you washing for or the size of the load.#2 How offen do you need to wash.#3 How much money do you need to spend.Once you did your research your on your way.

    I have loved my LG front loader for 3 years, since when we bought it brand new. However, recently it started making odd noises when spinning and cycling. I called to get a repairman out and he told me it was the bearing and would cost over $1200 to replace. He told me to get a new top loader, no electronic stuff - just regular dials. He said the way that these front loaders are made they all break like Pete Z. said and he wouldnt recommend any brand because they are all made overseas with cheap parts with inferior metal in the bearings. With respect to the mildew issue, I keep door open after every load and use baking soda in with my detergent to prevent mildew. You MUST empty out the drain at least one a month. Moreover, if you have an achy back, the bending to get the clothes out will hurt - as it does me with my degenerative disk disease. I will opt for a top loader and use the money I save to do something fun other than wasting it on a washing machine that doesnt last...

    I am totally happy with my purchase of an LG True Steam front loading washer and dryer. They have great features and do a wonderful job....no regrets!

    I have had an LG front loader for about six months and LOVE it. To avoid odor problems with any front loader, 1. leave the door open when not in use, 2. use powdered detergent (as opposed to liquid), and 3. Wash a load with bleach now and then. I have all white towels and sheets, so I use bleach at least once per week. Also, mine is a floor model, which lowered the cost by almost 50%. It was still new, but much cheaper, so I splurged on the extended warranty. By the way, I researched this issue thoroughly and concluded that LG is the best, based on customer complaints, and Kenmore is the worst. Good luck.

    Just a little note from the guy that replaced my washer (12 years old). He said the worst thing to put in a washer is LIQUID softener. I never used that in my washer & don't know if that is correct or not. Maybe an expert can answer this.

    I've had a Frigidaire front loader for apx 10 yrs now. My laundry room is in the basement. To avoid a mold issue, I leave the door open. I use both liquid soap and fabric softener. Apx once every 2-3 months, I remove the soap/fs compartment and thoroughly clean it with a mild bleach solution (as indicated in the manual). My clothes are VERY clean and I find that, especially jeans and towels are lasting much longer than they did when I owned a top loader. I've NEVER had any mechanical issues (knock on wood) with my machine. ***** for front loaders!!!

    I have a front loader and wouldn't change back to the top loader at all. The one thing I wish I'd have done was to get the pedestals. Liquid softerners in a washer is soooooo much better than the sheets in the dryer. My warrenty on my dryer would have been voided if I'd have used the sheets. The sheets contain an oil based product which is activated by the heat of the dryer. because of this activation, the oil settles on the lint screen and will ultimately plug it up. This will then prevent air circulation and can cause a fire. The only use I have for sheets now is in my studio when I'm working with glitter.

    Lee Anne - don't know if you have already made your decision BUT I have had a LG front loader machine for 5 years and I will NEVER have another one. I have to leave the door open all the time to help prevent mold in the bit of water that is always left at the bottom after each wash; if you don't, you have to buy cleaners specially made to kill that mold or your clothes start to smell "funny". I know some love front loaders, but I'll go with the less expensive top loader next time. JMHO & 2 cents.

    I have one of each in my house (Kenmore Elite front loader and Maytag Commercial top loader). Hands down, I wish the top loader was in the upstairs (near the master). The biggest complaint I have (apart from the funny smell occasionally that is well noted here) is that you can't "soak" anything. I don't know about others, but occasionally want to soak stinky clothes in something that makes them smell better. When I want to do that....carry them all thy way to the basement of the house for the top loader.

    My friend stated that she has a front loader and it is a lot of maintence! The water sits in the door gasget, it starts to smell bad after a while! I have a top loader that conserves water. It is a Fisher &Pykel. It does a great job washing the clothes and the spin cycle is unbelievable! check it out.for yourself.

    Front loader definitely. We purchased an LG front loader about 7 years ago and it has operated flawlessly ever since. LG doesn't seem to have the same problem as Whirlpool in having mildew on the gasket. I do however dry the crevice at the bottom of the door seal after doing the week's laundry. Uses less water and it's higher spin rate leaves the clothes dryer and used less energy in drying.

    We bought a Samsung front-loader a month ago and we love it! The clothes come out much less soaked, and kitchen rugs that had many stains left after being washed many times in our old top-loader actually came clean from the Steam cycle. We have a pause function that serves to soak clothes. No mold problem as yet.

    I am also looking for a new washer and I will not be buying another Maytag appliance. I have a Maytag washer and dryer and they will be 6 yrs old in Sept. and between the 2, there has been 19 repairs on them. I also really hate the idea of having to buy a pedistal so you don't kill your back to use them.

    Becky, I think you and I had the same OLD Maytag front loader . I don't think many are named Maytag Nepture. My washer was 12 when it had a problem that was too expensive to replace a part. The Neptune dryer won't die so I still have it.

    After 38 years of marriage, we finally purchased the washer-dryer set of my dreams. My set is front loader type. I suggest you purchase that type. Bad back allows not bending and pulling to empty heavy jeans, towels etc. Tremendous time saver, clothes spin out almost dry! Noticeable savings in energy bill, and washing powder liquids last much longer. Overall, I give it a 10. You will be pleased.

    I totally agree. Stay away from the front loaders. I had one and it got stinky and stained. I have a high efficiency GE that works like a front loader but is actually a top loader. I am 100% pleased with it.

    We're ready to donate our top loading Maytag Neptune that we purchased new in 2005. The gasket broke on the top about 5 years ago and cannot be repaired. Clothes get caught and it makes the washer stinky. Whirlpool doesn't support the model any more. Since we won't be buying a Maytag, interested in what others have to say about HE brands and top v front loading.

    THEY DON'T MAKE APPLIANCES LIKE THEY USED TO! WE HAVE A MAYTAG FRIG, BOTTOM FREEZER. WE SPENT AROUND $500.00 TO FIND OUT WHY IT KEPT FREEZING UP & STOPPING; LOTS OF WASTED FOOD! NOW MY HUBBY HAS TO DEFROST IT REGULARILY!! MAYTAG REPAIR MAN??? WHAT A JOKE! ONLY IF YOU WANT TO PAY $I00.00---JUST FOR A ''SERVICE'' CALL TO LOOK AT IT!! NOT TO MENTION WE EXPECTED ''FROST FREE'' !     Oh boy, I havent read all the comments, but I was on a blog site , dont remember whose , a BIG discussion about this very thing.. Lots of smell problems with many front loaders nowadays so you have to buy a special cleaner to stop the ick smell, and then leave the door open? How is this an improvement over top loaders? Also HGTV message board has piles of comments.. good and bad, under cleaning and organizing. Happy shopping LeeAnne..this is a toughie! Be sure to check consumer report also! I think it was LG(?) that got a bad report when i looked some time back. And maybe ask a repairman! Oh an afterthought....hubs built me a pedestal for my dryer...I also was tired of bending over and reaching in and afraid I would never get out again, or at least until hubs got home to pull me out! One of the best things he has done for me. And it is not so pretty, it just works great. Dont know how a homemade one would work for a washer tho.

    I've had the Whirlpool Duet for about 4yrs now and I hate the front loader. The drawer that you pull open to put the detergent in gets mold in it and I have to take the drawer out and wipe it dry every time I use it. I also have to get the excess water out of the gasket because it retains water and gets mold on it. And of course leave the door open to dry out. I also bought a new Magtag top loader for my vacation home and liked it at first but it doesn't always spin out my blankets well enough and I have to respin. Out of the two I think I would go with a top loader.

    I have a front loading HE washing machine and would never purchase another. Yes it is water saving and all the "green" saving BUT it doesn't clean clothes. My daughter and other front loaders have said the same thing, we wish we had our old agitator top loading machines back. As for brands, it is my 4th Kenmore and when it's time to replace this Mac.hine, I would buy another Kenmore

    I love my front loaders - Speed Queen Commercial models are work horses and were a super buy at $400 for 3yr old set - gotta love Craig's List. Wonderful hubby built really nice pedestal, I leave washer open occasionally but no odor problem.

    WOW, I had no idea there were so many front loader haters! I've had my "set" for about five years now and just out of concern for mold potential have always from day one left the door and the dispensing drawer on the washer open after each use. It's never had a strange smell, or signs of mildew in the machine or in the gasket. It's a fridgidaire and It gets my clothes a lot cleaner than the old agitator that I used to have, and I actually reduced the spin action to 'medium' in order to reduce the vacuum packed effect and wrinkling of the clothes...LOL They are not a "matched set" because the dryer that matched came with a plastic drum and the affinity dryer had a SS drum which is what I wanted... Hubby built my "stand" to save the 400.00 dollars they wanted for theirs, it irritates me still not to have the drawer space for my detergents and such but an overhead shelf works for that too. It was built with 3/4" marine plywood b/c that is what we had on hand and it's never cause a problem for the washer spinning or anything else. About twice a year I use a small watering type can with lemon pine sol and a toothbrush to clean the "dispensing drawer" of excess fabric softner and spilled detergent. My detergent use has gone way down because i measure better and the washer warns of suds lock if you use an excessive amount. I've never used a washer cleaner....But if I had to it would probably start with Vinegar....LOL I LOVE the fact that I can wash my big bedspreads in it without worrying and that the hubby's jeans legs dont end up wrapped around an agitator.... Here's what I hate, I hate that after starting the machine, the door is locked and I can't "add" the wash rag or what have you, that was left behind. Also, I'm pretty sure that I am personally responsible for keeping Rit Dye in Business for at least 35 years, and I don't see anyway to do that in this machine... I love the washer, but the dryer...now that's another matter, the lint trap is not made efficiently and traps lint under the Frame that hold the screen and forces you to take it off with a screwdriver to get it all out...it doesn't dry the clothes well and I have had to run it as many as four times to get jeans and towels dry. If I had it to do again, I'd fight tooth and nail to get another gas dryer like my last one! It was a kenmore (so was the washer) and was original to the house (1973) I replaced the drum belt and roller once, (myself, no repairman) and rebuilt the main gas valve assembly; again myself, in 1987. I also replaced the ignightor in 1989. But even with all of that, it was a fabulously efficient dryer and I loved the thing...once through the cycle, stuff was Dry! Sadly a gas dryer is a "special order" now and hubby just wouldn't go for it...if he knew how much extra we have probably paid in electric since we bought this new dryer, he might rethink his objection to spending an extra 250.00 on the gas dryer...

    We purchased a Maytag set about 5 years ago. If I could do it all over again, I would get a front loader. We have a very small laundry area....just enough to fit the appliances behind the doors. And because of the doors and my being short, it's awkward for me to get things in the wash without a struggle. I would opt for the front loader if I were you. I cannot see a disadvantage to it.

    Got a Samsung washer & dryer last Christmas (2011), and loved that I stayed with the top loader they both work great , I keep the lid open, always have, just makes sense to let anything air dry.. never have any problems, the front loaders remind me too much of the ol laundrymat days...So glad I didn't go with a front loader after reading that so many hate them.

    I so agree with Karen from Houston, we have the Whirlpool Duets and would never buy a front loader again!!!! The clothes are not as clean and they do not have that fresh clean smell after you remove them. Also I have washed my bathroom mats and for some reason they are still soaking wet even after the spin cycle, you would think that since the machines don't use so much water they would not be soaking wet! For my money I would stick with a top loader.

    WOW.WOW!! AWESOME, thank you all!! This has been a wonderful post! I have enjoyed reading all of the opinions I am going to buy top load without the center cylinder for these reasons; I do not want the extra maintenance to prevent mildew, I always throw another item or 10 in a load while it is ruining, the high up front cost for a designer machine that costs as much to repair as it does to purchase and that does break according to the repair men....naw I will stay with the top load.

    I had a front load and I absolutely hated it! Once you closed the door and started it there was no going back to add or take out a piece of clothing. I never thought my clothes were 'clean'. I would NEVER Ever own another one. Thank heavens I now have the top loader!

    I have afront loader washing machine. I did my homework and checked on a lot of brands and thought samsung model wf 350 was the best one and most energy star than the rest but it smells it does nto get the clothes clean even with bleach. DO NOT BUY FRONT LOADER.

    Goodness... I have been lusting after the front loaders for ages waiting for the day I needed to replace our 20+ year old set. I am very glad to find this series of responses... Back to the drawing board! I guess it will be another top loading Kenmore washer for us even though I am 1/2" shy of 5 feet tall and also have trouble reaching the bottom of the tub at times... This will only be our 3rd set, all Kenmore, in 43 years! That being said... even the Kenmores needed a new piece once in a while. Fortunately, my husband is handy that way which prolonged their life.

    Agreed, the front loader manufacturers recommend cleaning the front loaders after so many wash loads. the machine prompts you to run the cleaning cycle. You can purchase a tide tablet cleaner, or just run the ""clean machine" cycle with one cup clorox bleach, (empty, of course) and no odor problem. Also, the newer models have a latch on the door when not in use to allow air to circulate. Also, as someone stated before, the manufacturer recommends leaving the door open at times when away so that fresh air can circulate. many of these tips could also apply to top loader!!!!! Still love my machines.

    Top Loaders have been around for yrs. So they are the Best ... The New Front loaders don't like Powder, you always have to make everything Liquid.. So Less problems if you get a Top Loader... Have fun shopping. :)

    I have a high-efficiency top-loader (after Lowes agreed to take back the faulty front-loader that I had bought). I try to like green products and I hate that I cannot recommend the high-efficiency washers (front load or top load) - I simply do not feel that my clothes get as clean as they did with a regular washer. I had to replace all my towels after the first (faulty) washer ruined them - the smell would not come out. I am afraid to use bleach since they use so little water - I'm afraid I'll use too much and it will "eat" through my clothes or shorten their life span.

    I hate everyone has had their issues with front loaders. I've had my Whirlpool duet washer and dryer for 6 years with no smell whatsoever. I, like some others on here, have left the door open from day one, and started removing the dispenser drawer and draining the water out and allowing it to dry after noticing some mold growing in the drawer opening. But never a smell. I do wash every load of towels with bleach so maybe that's why I never have smell (and I wash those pretty frequently). The best thing about having the front loaders for me is the gorgeous laundry room I have now (even though I am pretty happy with the cleanliness of my clothes). My husband put a custom counter top over my washer and dryer so it reminds you of a dishwasher set-up. He put up a "faux" wall to cover the hoses. I have a counter top to fold laundry and you wouldn't believe the compliments I have gotten. But seriously, as far as performance and other issues, I myself have had no problems with odor. I would buy front loaders again in a heartbeat.

    Whatever you buy, I would recommend buying the service contract with it. The bearings went out on my 3-yr old Whirlpool top-loader and they were built into the drum so the entire drum had to be replaced - would have been very expensive if I hadn't had the service contract. It pains me to say it, but they really don't make things like they used to. Repairs are very costly.

    @ Keri, the horse drawn wagon was around for Years, and the people who invented automobiles obviously didn't think it was "the Best"....each to their own, I personally prefer the tactile experience of reading a "real" book, while my hubby prefers the kindle...improvements are only made because of the willingness of some to take a gamble on something new...LOL I love not dealing with an agitator in my front loader...but I used to have a machine that I cannot remember the brand; that the agitator went up and down instead of the most common side to side...I loved that thing and Nothing before or since has gotten my clothes as clean!

    I have tried both and the top loader is the best for me. One drawback I didn't like with the front loader...Once you start it and you find something you want to throw in...you can't open it. It locks.

    My new top load has no big agitator in it. That is one of the big bonus' of the front load, but now you can have that in a top load as well. I love that.

    Just wanted to add a note to those who think you cannot #1-soak clothes or #2-add clothes after the front loader has been started because it locks...not true of all models. My Whirlpool Duet front loader has a soak cycle AND the water level remains low enough that I am able to add clothes for up to 5 minutes after the machine starts. I simply hit the pause button, the door unlocks and I add the forgotten item(s). I use that feature all the time!

    I have a front loader and experience the smell for a while. I also have a preventative maintenance contract through Sears. Called them, they discovered that the rubber gasket that goes around the door had no drain hole in it. So the water would sit there and then would start to stink. Since they put a new gasket on with a drain hole - no such problem. I do leave the door cracked a little just to let it dry out which would seem logical to me. If you close up anything that is damp, it will mildew or mold.

    Front end loader washers are supposed to use less water and clean better. The dryers use much less electricity too. We have the Samsung brand. I would suggest not getting from Sears. Getting a Maytag brand machine serviced under warranty can be a pain since in my sister's experience neither Sears nor Maytag claimed it was their issue. On my washer if I need to add something after it has been started, I hit the 'Pause/Start' button and the door unlocks. We keep the door to the washer open when not in use per the owner's manual and have not ahd a problem with smell.

    I carry Sears Protection Agreement on all my applicances. they weren't purchased nor are they Sears brand - Sears Protection Agreement covers preventative maintenance ( 2 visits a year) and repair maintenance. My washer is 15 years old and they have replaced everything in it with the exclusion of the case. I basically have a brand new washer. Each time Sears has come out for a repair, my cost is ZERO! I would so recommend the SPA to all home owners for all of their applicances

    My "laundry room" is a closet with just enough room for a washer and dryer. I wanted a utility sink in there so I bought a Maytag 3000 series and stacked them. Added 2 wire shelves above the sink and now I love it! Had my Maytags for over 3 years now and not a bit of problems. No odor problems either.

    I had a front load set and HATED it!! The gasket was always mildewing. Mine rusted out right under the gasket on the outside after 4 years. I bought a Maytag top load without an agitator. I LOVE it!!!

    Again my 2 cents...why do we have to buy special "cleaners" for a cleaning machine..and then , leave the door open? Why is this better technology than the old top loader? I have had mine for maybe 20 years? I just repair it once in a while..same with the dryer. However I had a neighbor who had an old wringer machine, told me it was the best, Well, my first load of diapers, I never used it AGAIN!! ick! haha

    I did decide, I am buying it at Sears because they have the best prices & I am buying a top load with no center agitator. I do not want to deal with all of the maintenance issues. I have not purchased it yet because I am giving my washer & dryer to my daughter when she moves into her new home and I do not want to store them or move them twice.

    OOOkaaayyy! finally! Good choice. And Probably easier to repair , if needed. I saw a thread on HGTV.com message board like this too, just as long! Most favored top loaders, and reported so much trouble with front loaders. @Leida..yup, get s me every time,cleaner for your cleaner.. plus my friend came home one day recently, and had a floor full of water, her front loader needed a new gasket ALREADY, she fixed it herself, but good gravy!

    Lee Anne...you will enjoy the machine. It takes a little getting use to, especially at the start of the cycle as it "senses" the load prior to the water fill. It also runs much quieter that the older machines. As I said above, we are very happy with ours.

    Hi Lee Anne, I am new to the site, hence my lateness in seeing your post :P I do have a front loader and love it, but here is what I wish I know before or shortly after I bought it. It is best to drain after you are done your wash for the day - most have this cycle. Also, use the clean cycle monthly - whether you use a commercial clean produce, bleach or vinegar probably doesn't matter. But if you do follow these steps you won't have an odour problem - need to start this within a few months of purchasing. Had a problem - but solved now that I do these steps. Happy washing LOL

    Lee Anne, safety tip we got from Clark Howard--our local save money guy---when you replace your washer, buy hoses that are made of flexible metal because they will not dry rot and break! They are more expensive, but worth the money!

    PS...Kay Cass asked how to get smell out of front loader...there were a lot of responses, so you are wise to buy top load...I WILL NEVER OWN A FRONT LOADER UNLESS THEY STOP MAKING TOP LOADERS! I HATE MINE!! I resent having to buy an additional product to clean something that is supposed to clean! DUH!!! I HATE having to leave the door open...these washers look sleek and modern in the ads or in the store, but look stupid with the door open in your laundry room! A suggestion is wipe under the gasket at the door where it gets wet with bleach evrey so often...well, great tip, but can you imagine a Sr. citizen trying to get that job done! It gets difficult to stand on your head for these types of jobs!!!

    Kenmore Leida, I have always had good luck with their products & the prices on sale are always the best & the service men are well trained, but I have not needed one in many years.

    I do, but I am adjusting to the low volume of water, in my mind I wonder if it is getting the clothes as clean as the old technology and I feel that it is rougher on the clothes.

    Yep, if I had any one complaint about my front-load machine it would be regarding the low volume of water it uses. Always. No matter what. In most cases, I'm okay with the machine chosing the water level for me but there are some loads I'd like to be able to chose for myself. However, the government and the washer manufacturers have taken that ability away from us with the new front loaders and top loaders, alike. For the first time in the two years I have owned my FL, I used the "soak" setting this past week. Soak? Ha! Having the clothes tumble around barely wet for 1/2 the time of the wash cycle was hardly my definition of soak! Next time I'll soak clothes like my grandmother did--in a wash tub....or in my case, the laundry room sink.

    It is so funny all the comments about low water! I was so stunned when we first got our new washer that I took out the clothes and smelled them to make sure they smelled clean. I think the secret is that it spins, stops, spins, dumps water and puts in more water...the secret is in the sequence...must be...but whatever, it works. My clothes smell great and I have never had a stench start up in anything I have worn...so whatever it is it works!

    The high-efficiency washers, front-load or top-load are really important out west and in other areas where water is a limited (and expensive) resource. The whole point is to get clothes clean with less water. But it is a shock to see how little "less" is.

    Well yesterday I washed the HEAVY pom-pom bathmat....just a couple of towels in with it...but not the heavy towels, the "fun" ones that have critters on them that I use for grandbaby...ANYWAY, I was surprised when I started the washer and it did the normal fill, rolled them back and forth and then stopped to add more water...so my conclusion is that it adjusts the water based on the weight in the tub, because I've never seen it use as much as it did for that load...

    Yeah it can twist them up pretty good, my solution is to fold them when I put them in and not to have a lot of other things in there with them....i put in like three pairs of jeans and call it done...that helps some...but they still come out of the dryer wrinkled...but I iron the jeans anyway so it doesn't really matter too much to me...

    If you have clothes with drawstrings, they can really get twisted. I have to unwind some of my clothes. The twisting is worse on Normal or heavy cycles - my washer has a casual and a delicate - I tend to use Casual a lot for clothing other than blue jeans and non-delicate underwear. I use Normal for sheets, jeans, non-delicate underwear. I use Heavy for towels. Yes - "learning curve" - good way to put it.

    I have front loaders by BOSCH - they are about 8years old and I have had no issues! I do try to leave the door open (close lightly so it doesnt lock) - never an issue with mildew. I bought these before BOSCH changed their lines of distribution so they were considered high end and only purchased at appliance dealers (you couldnt buy the bosch name at big box stores) - I say that becuz ive heard their quality has lowered since hitting main stream and competing with the big dogs. That being said? My next set with be ASKO!

    I had a Whirlpool Duet for ten years and was pretty satisfied with it. After reading many reviews, I decided on a front loading Maytag. It does take longer to finish a load of clothes but my clothes are so much cleaner than the Duet.

    Beware of the musty odor from front loaders..... leave the door open most of the time..it seals so tight,,,,,if you take some things out just a bit damp to hang it may get funky.....

    I always leave the door open overnight and mine still hasn't developed an odor. I just wish it would last like the old ones did.

    i love my platinum samsung front loaders, they were the top on the consumer reports comparison. ..... also you have to remember to remove the shipping bolts when you get a new washer. it can be quite a surprise.....

    I would buy a washer with the agitator....it got my clothes much cleaner than the new Samsung set we bought without one....my mother in law says the same thing!!! my next one will definitely be.....

    I do not like the HE washers which have no agitators and are supposed to sense the water level needed. Ha. I've had a load go through an entire cycle and there have been some areas which were not even wet and/or the dry detergent had not completely dissolved. We use the deep water cycle for every load because of this. That defeats the purpose of being a "highly efficient" washer. Swapped one Samsung for another Samsung because the repairman agreed it did not sense correctly. Second Samsung did the same way. Got a Maytag which is only slightly better. Our 20 year old washer we replaced cleaned much better. Washers with agitators are getting hard to find.

    Front or top loader is really a personal preference decision. I've had both and for me, I prefer a top loader. You can add water, soak clothes, etc. In a front loader, that is nearly impossible. I often add a few stray pieces of clothing as my top loader starts, you can't do that with a front loader.
