Create a flower planter from an old tire!

My future father-in-law came up with this brilliant idea over 20 years ago to cut and flip an old tire inside out and use it as a gorgeous planter!

You can check out more pictures and see the full tutorial on my blog, Pink Hammers & Sippy Cups! http://www.pinkhsc.com/2012/07/tire-planter....

The little ones are probably from wheel barrel tires, or carts.

    Isnt the tire toxic material?

I do NOT think a tire is toxic where plants are concerned, because I have seen so many, many tire planters over many years !!! I am happy to see a tire have a second life, before being put onto a mountain of used tires with no where to go. Usually the regular car ot truck tires are used, but this little tire is adorable ! Don't eat the leftover tire pieces !!! Those might be toxic to people !!! LOL

Pretty for flowers but NOT to grow food. Tire rubber will slowly biodegrade and release zinc, carcinogenic PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and other toxic compounds into your soil. Toxics from tires are an even greater concern in some recycled products, such as rubber mulch and artificial turf, that are made from shredded or pelletized old tires. Do not use them in food gardens or on land that you might garden in the future.

the size of the tire will determine size of planter! for the woman who wanted smaller use a riding lawnmower tire for the lady who wanted bigger go with semi truck tire or 1 off a dump truck. Best place to go to find them would be local salvage yard or even the dump if they recycle.

I would think that if you cleaned them well and sealed them with some type of sealer, it would be fine for growing food. Anyway it takes many years for them to start to biodegrade and cause problems. That is why it is a good idea to recycle them. :)

So funny I was just looking at ours yesterday, I have them hidden in the back of the garden. Was going to move then up front, will do for sure now, with a bright new coat of paint!

I am 65 and as a girl in farm community everyone had tire planters all sizes tractor, grain truck old family car. Painted unpainted I guess I fail to see the attraction but do appreciate the recycle.
