Flowers I made for a friends wedding

A friend of mine is getting married in October and has a really tight budget. He and his bride are doing a "Day of the Dead" theme. They asked me for help with making centerpieces and this is what I decided to do. I made the larger flowers out of coffee filters and the smaller multicolored flowers out of cupcake liners.

so glad I put in something about weddings and found this idea...very nice and very much needed...I think I will play with it, see if I can tip them and absorb a little color...mix maybe some white and smaller red ones...thank you!

Wendy, I have been coloring mine. Some of them before I assemble them (by dipping the coffee filters in food coloring) and some after they are assembled (Added food coloring to spray bottles and then layering on the color by spraying it, letting it dry, applying a second coat etc.. Good luck with your project. These are super easy to make and cute.

the above with the yellow, green and red...that looks like they are hanging on an arch or something. I was actually wondering about creating some and hanging them up high, a bit like people do pom poms...I think they are stunning! May I pin the pictures on my pinterest?

Elaine, I am attaching some pictures, but I think the best bet is to look up "Coffee Filter Flowers on YouTube. There are literally hundreds of videos with step by step instructions on how to make them. I definately think that is the best route to making these. This would be a really fun and easy GirlScout craft.

You will need: Coffee Filters, Scissors, something you can use as a stem (pipe cleaners, ...»

Chenele Stems, Bamboo Skewers, etc) I used a chopstick for the stems in the flowers pictured above, Glue gun (low temp), glue sticks and if you choose to dye them, food coloring,(You can dip dye them first and let them dry overnight or what I did was mix 1 tsp vinegar, 1/2 container of acrylic paint, a few drops of food coloring, Kool-Aid mix and HOT water in a sprayer bottle, shake it up well before each application then lightly sprayed them, let it dry, spray again and again until you get the color you want.(Do this step outside, because it is messy)

I used 10 Coffee Filters. I seperated them into two piles of five each. Fold them in half and then fold in half again. For one pile of five cut them about an inch from the top (the wavy part) Round the corners and cut a little swoop out of the center (The stack should resemble a heart when they are folded up. Then round the corners and cut a swoop out of the second pile. You should have two piles of five filters each both resembling hearts (One large heart and one small heart) Put a glob of glue on the top of your stem and feed the little pile of coffee filters from the bottom of the stem up towards the glue, Repeat until you are done with the small "heart" pile, then feed the large "heart" pile on one by one, scrunch it around the glue, add glue, feed another filter on until you have all 10 on there. You literally cannot mess this up.

    • These are the Coffee Filters that I used for this project. I purchased them at Walmart for $1.88 each. One package of 100 qty will make 20 large flowers.
    • Seperate your coffee filters into two piles of five each.
    • Fold your piles of five coffee filters in half.
    • Both piles of five should look like this. Folded in half and then in half again.
    • Cut one pile approximately one inch from the top
    • Your piles should look like this after you have cut one inch from the top of one pile of five.
    • Round the corners of your piles
    • Round the corners of your piles
    • Cut a little "Swoop" out of the center of your piles. It will resemble a heart when done
    • You should have two piles that look like this. One big heart and one little heart.
    • Cut a little bit off of the tip or bottom of the heart, this makes a small hole in the center of each filter and makes it easier the feed the stem through.
    • Unfold your piles and get ready to assemble your flower.
    • Put a glob of glue (I used a low temp glue gun and medium temp glue stick for this because it gets pretty hot) Expect to get some glue on your fingertips. OUCH!
    • Feed the small filters one by one from the bottom of the stem up towards your glob of glue at the top of the stem
    • Scrunch for filter around the top of the stem, It will dry pretty fast. Repeat until you are done with all 10 filters (Smallest to largest). You cannot mess this up and it actually looks better the more "Scrunched" up the filters are.
