Bumble Bees

I have some awesome bumble bees that do an awesome job of pollinating my garden and lavender. The problem I have is that they have decided to make their nest under my back porch. There is a little opening and I can see them going in and out and they aren't hurting anyone. My question is do they eat wood and can they get into the house. I hate to kill them but I also don't want them living inside with me? HELP ! What should I do?

If you are sure they are bumblebees, I would leave them. My understanding is that bumblebee nests don't last all that long. So just leave them and they will move on. The don't eat wood, and they aren't really interested in anything in your house, so they will probably leave you alone.

I think the bumble bees will be far more interested in your lavender than your house. Should the occasional one get inside, you can trap them using a plastic cup and piece of paper, then release them outside.

I have found that if you ignore bumble bees you can coexist with them very nicely! They are big and tend to be intimidating, but are relatively harmless. If there are several around, just walk away from them. If you need to work in that area and there are a lot of them around, you can plug in a box fan and move it close to where you are working and they will fly away.

I had a nest in a bluebird house last summer. They never bothered me as I walked and gardened nearby.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the advice I was hoping that would be the response. Our local bee man called last night too and said the same thing.

    I love my bumble bees.

Jan M, I'm glad you didn't kill the bees because we all need them for pollination. We sometimes forget their importance to the environment.
