Painting over stain on a paper bag floor

Hi there, I'm about to put in my first paper bag floor and I'm planning on staining it once it's dry. I've been thinking about decorative accents and I'd like to know if I could stain the floor, then paint a stencil on it (to look like a rug) and THEN poly over it. Thanks in advance for your input.

Hello, This is my advise, plan out what it is you want painted and block that off while you are staining, when you have completed the staining aspect of your floor and it is completely dry. remove the tape/paper from the areas you wanted to paint. Paint allow it to dry and then apply the Poly to the floor I used 5 coats, I have known people that have used 10 you can get gloss or flat depending on the results you would like. I will be doing an entire house this way in a few months I am soo excited!
