Sturdy trellis

I asked my husband to build me a sturdy trellis and as usual, he outdid himself. We (well, I stained it) started with two pre-made panels that are 2 x 6 found in the garden center at Menard's. Add to that three green treated 4x4 posts (8 footers), two 2x4 scraps of green treated lumber (bottom of each panel) and 2x6 green treated cap and this beautiful trellis cost us less than $50 to build. Of course, it is absolutely square and level, cause that is the kind of guy he is. Each post is sunk into cement (which we had on hand, leftover from a fence install.

Unfortunately, a violet hail storm quickly decimated this clematis and though it has come back this year, it is just two sad little vines. I am hoping that it is photosynthe...

Sound like your husband is one great carpenter. The trellis looks great!

Beautiful! I love the contrasting stains...glad you helped your husband with the project; my dh and I work together on most of our projects around here and it makes us closer to have this in common.

He is pretty handy. Worked as a framing carpenter when he was in college. He is an art teacher, so beyond being structurally sound, his projects are always nice aesthetically.

Lori, his work reflects what he does! What a wonderful trellis. I get excited about things like that.

Your husband did an awesome job. That is one handsome trellis, and any plant would be lucky to be climbing it.

So pretty and and very sturdy looking. Stain looks good against the green plant. I like the way it's perfectly level! LOL.

Donna, all of our privacy fence was reclaimed fencing (love Craig's list). Some is cedar, some green treated and some old posts with some new posts. Sound nightmarish, but we restained it all and it has a similar two-tonish quality to it.

This is beautiful Lori. How nice to have a handy hubby that will work with used goods. My hubby is very handy, but would never let me pick up fence parts on CL and then put it together again. Maybe some day I can convince him since he's pretty impressed what I've done with used pieces of furniture.

Our yard is not that big and we could afford the panels and posts from Menard's, but they were so poorly milled with inconsistency in thickness. Instead, I hunted for quality fencing and we opted for new posts where needed. We were able to fence a 60 x 40 foot corner and another forty feet of fencing for connecting buildings to corners and the like for under $600--and it isn't going to warp or fall to pieces. We have a unique yard--lots of terracing, so mixing heights worked well for us. ...»
We wanted total privacy from the alley, but a more breathable fence for the side.

    • The tall fencing surrounded a church owned property in Lincoln, Ne. It is cedar and was custom installed to their slope...and it matched our slope! How cool is that?
    • The side fencing is green treated with spaces between boards to allow it some breathing space. We added a cap of new lumber, which the birds and squirrels just love.

Thanks for the added pictures Lori. It looks so pretty. I think the problem my hubby has with used is he thinks it's easier to just head to HoDe and grab what he needs when he needs it and get busy. It's not that he's not "green". We built our home as "green" as we could at the time of construction, "Green" to him means energy efficient though. To me it covers so much more! As I have time to share our home you'll see I'm into making old things work when possible. right now I'm refinishing and restoring a vintage dining set for our son.

I am the hunter and gatherer...willing to track down materials, drive and barter. My husband is willing to work hard with what I find, but would probably just drive to Menard's if I weren't willing to do the legwork.

Lori, maybe that's what I need to do. Do all the hunting and picking up myself so it's ready when he is. Thanks!
