The Garden in August

North Alabama had a long, cold winter, a wet spring and a dry summer. Gardening has been a challenge, sometimes an exercise in patience (maybe next year on those hydrangea blooms).
My climbing rose blooms heavily in the spring. After a much-needed rain, it produced this one perfect bloom in late August. My mother-in-law rooted this rose from a rose she saved from a funeral spray at a friend's funeral. It was here when my husband and I bought the house from her 23 years ago.
Every time I move something in the shady corner of my flower bed, one of these jumps and startles me (I guess I startled him first).
Joe Pye Weed 'Phantom' and a winged visitor. Unlike the native 8-ft. Joe Pye, the label on this one says it grows to 40 inches.
Solar light and one bloom of a Million Bells.
Bumble bee mug shot. On Joe Pye Weed 'Phantom'.

You've made two very good cases for planting that Joe Pye.

Yes, @Douglas Hunt , when I made a bee-line for it (pun intended) at Lowe's, a vendor who was working on the plant table lowered her voice and told me "That's a weed". I bought two.
