Project Showcase: Making the Most of a Very Small Backyard

These Long Island homeowners had been living a long time with absolutely nothing in their backyard. Situated in a community of tightly compacted properties, they couldn’t figure out what to do, or how to do it.
With no room for a pool, the idea of a portable hot tub, set into a two-level deck, appealed to them. Long Island Hot Tub being affiliated with a top notch design and build firm, enabled us to bring the whole thing together with a minimum of hassle to the clients.
Trex Transcend composite decking appealed to them because they did not want to deal with the regular upkeep of a wood deck. That desire also inspired what we did at ground level. We got rid of what grass they had, replacing it with a gravel area for their hammock.
To maximize their budget, we installed a prefabricated outdoor kitchen, fitted with a Napoleon Grill, in the deck’s lower level.
The clean, bright look of their spa deck and the hydrotherapy and opportunities for fun it provides, as well as the extra privacy provided by new perimeter trees, all helped give them a backyard escape that truly belies their property’s size.
Bullfrog Spa
Just because there’s no room for a pool doesn’t mean there’s no room for the fun of a water feature. Additional benefit: this Bullfrog Spa offers removable jetted seats with massaging jets to target specific muscle groups.
Privacy Trees
Because their property is only 20 feet deep and very close to their neighbors, we added several 9-10-foot Leyland Cypress trees for privacy. These are fast growing and when planted, say, four feet apart, if untrimmed will close the gap between them in one growing season.
Trex Transcend Decking
The homeowners chose Trex’s light taupe “Rope Swing” color for the deck itself. It extends the cool and relaxed atmosphere of the home’s white exterior. Like all the Trex Transcend collection, it boasts durability, low-maintenance and eco-friendly qualities.
Trex Transcend Railing
Picking up the home’s siding as well as an existing white backyard fence, the homeowners chose a white railing, which pops nicely as it frames the light taupe deck. Strong and sturdy, the Trex railing kit is quick and easy to assemble.
Prefabricated Outdoor Kitchens
This outdoor kitchen has all-fireproof metal studs, an acrylic stucco finish, Napoleon Grill, Supercast concrete countertop, refrigerator, and on-board entertainment center with satellite radio and a dock for their iPods.

That's a lot of outdoor living in a small space. You must not have the problems with Leyland cypress that they do in a lot of areas.
