Cabinets Kitchens Painting

Painted Kitchen Cabinets

We used a Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation Kit to change our kitchen cabinets from light to dark. The kit was fairly easy to use and would use it again. There's just a lot of waiting in between coats to dry. We has used it previously in our master bathroom to try it out first and loved the results. We chose the Chocolate color and used the glaze. We chose to use a paint brush since the instructions recommends using a brush if you are using the glaze. I think the paint lines give the glaze something to hold onto.

Beautiful transformation! I am getting ready to do the same. You can get the kits at Kmart or Lowes, at least here in my town.

Thanks everyone. Rustoleum guarantees that the kit will work on real wood, like mine, or laminate cabinets. It comes in many colors. We bought the kit in Home Depot in the paint section. The store tints it to the color you want. There are 70 colors and finishes. Check out their website or look at the box when in the store. We used one kit and I think it was about $75. It covered the kitchen and the master bathroom vanities. ...»

It took about a week to complete only because we had a few hours after work each day to do it. You could probably do it in a complete weekend. The hardest part was waiting for each coat to dry before moving on to the next step.

Thanks for posting! Have been wanting to paint chocolate in my white kitchen cabinets. Amazing. . . my kitchen is very similar to yours. So much better than trying to imagine how it'll look.

Do you have to sand off any rough spots first? My Dad has very old wood cabinets and I would love to do this for him. After years and years there is a build up of grease. Just wondering if we had to sand them. Thanks. And you Kitchen is beautiful.

Question: I have the (ugly) beige laminate cabinets with the wood around them. HATE that beige and just want to paint the beige white. What can I use? I was told that it would be difficult to paint over the laminate. I like the wood...just not the beige. Thanks! Joanne

This looks great! Going from light to dark seems easier that going from dark to light. I have black cabs in the kitchen...anyone used this process going to light? Thanks.

The good thing about this kit is there is no sanding involved. There is a liquid deglosser that you rub on to get rid of any shine and grease on the cabinet fronts. The kit works for wood and laminate cabinets. The bar stools are from Target.

I have priced the kit and it is not cheap...about $79 at Home Depot to do just a few cabinets. i live in a Mobile Home and it was going to cost me about $300 or more to do just 6 small cabinets :-(

it is a small quart that comes in the kit which didn't look like it would go very far to me..Great idea but the kit is very small

Andrea they must be paying you to endorse the product because there is no way you could have done a bathroom and kitchen with one (1) Kit!!

I got the 200 sq ft kit for $149 at Lowes. It has a gallon of base paint. The hard part is the scrubbing to degloss and it really doesn't get the gloss off well. I went ahead with one set of cabinets and used very little paint. It takes too long to do so I may just leave the one set chocolate or do a few at a time. Long drying times for sure. Since all is water based I don't know how well the final coat will protect them. We'll see.

Kathleen you shouldn't need a lot to do the 6 small cabinets but you can use it for other things too.
