Fast Growing Trees

Can anyone suggest trees that are fast growing? We moved into a new home (in a new development)...which means NO trees, and I want to plant a couple in my backyard and one in my front yard. Would love to have a bit of shade. Any ideas? [I live in N.D.]

Sandy D. when evaluating the suggested trees, you'll want to do a little more research into each. Quite often fast growing trees are the ones that have brittle/fragile limbs. A good many fast growing trees have a high percentage of water stored in them, making them subject to breakage. So, while going through your short list, be sure to check on that.

Sandy, I want to second Becky's caveat. The trees you plant are probably going to become among the most important landscape features of your new home. Don't become one of those people who planted a Bradford pear only to rue the day they did! Here are six recommendations from the North Dakota State University Extension Service: 1. Maple-Silver and Amur 2. Hackberry-a North Dakota native and a tough, reliable tree. 3. Ashes--such as Dakota Centennial, Prairie Spire and Prairie Dome 4. Honeylocusts--Imperial and Skyline varieties are seedless and thornless 5. Among oaks, Bur Oak is generally the best 6. Lindens-Greenspire and Redmond are selected varieties with good form and an improved branching structure (On a personal note, I am just back from Italy. The lindens were in bloom when I was there, and I can tell you that, to my nose anyway, the fragrance of linden flowers on a warm summer day is heavenly.) Take the time to do a soil test before you make your selection, and use the information you receive to amend your soil so that the trees you plant have a long and happy life.
