Vegie gardening ~ Tomato trellis.

My new tomato trellis is working out quite nicely. Very easy to see and maintain the plants and decorative too! That gingerbread molding on the top is 158 years old and my husband fashioned the galvanized tops by hand.

I love this! I think I am going to make one for in front of my ugly shed and plant climbing flowers to block the shed. Thanks for the idea

If you ever get tired of your husband, send him to me. You people are filled with creative ideas. How do you keep your wood from rotting outside?

How absolutely beautiful - serving two purposes - beautifying your garden and allowing your tomatoes to grow. Congratulations!

Something that gorgeous for tomatoes. This raises the common veggies up a peg and allows them to grow up as well. A trellis this beautiful would normally be growing prize winning flowers. What creativity and artistry.

Very pretty! Do you fasten the tomato stalks to the wire to keep them upright? Mine need support to keep from falling over.

I tie them to the trellis with strips of old tee shirts. When tying any plant to a support make sure that you first tie the tie to the support and then carefully and loosely tie it around a supportive part of the plant (like under a leaf branch). This way when the plants move in the wind they do not get damaged.

I too love this. It is both artistic and functional. Old stockings (or cheap ones bought at the $ store) are great to use for ties, they have enough "give" and yet are strong enough, but best of all will not cut into the tomato branches.

What a team you and your husband make!! You dream it, he builds it!! You've GOT to have the happiest tomatoes in the state of Maine!! Do you plant the marigolds to keep bugs away from the tomatoes?? Another work of functional art from you!!!

OK, here's my correction - you are in Michigan apparently NOT Maine. But, there is a Bangor, Maine, right?? LOL

Rose Marie S, I've used both nylons and tee shirts and I like the tee shirts better. They don't have as much give so you don't have to tie them as tight, plus if you miss a few at the end of the season they just rot because they aren't synthetic like nylons. And yes, Susan S, it's Michigan. There are a lot of other Bangor's out there too. I know of one in Minnesota and another in Wisconsin.

My husband and I use yarn in a Sage color that blends in with the plants, so it doesn't show, and has some "give" whenever the plants grow. Here is a picture of a Burpee Supersteak tomato we recently picked. 2 1/2 plus pounds with a 17" circumference. It was very delicious, too.

Superb...I love this. Yes the marigolds will keep the tomatoe worms (butterfly larvae) away. The butterflies don't like the pungent smell and will not come near.

I can remember seeing alot of the older folks that grew gardens they use to use their old stockings to tie their plants up with.. To me it gave the garden that personal touch,,,and they lasted .
