trouble with sweetgum pop-ups

Last year we removed a 16-20" girth sweetgum tree, the stump was ground and the mulch saved. The roots 2 to 3 feet out keep sending up trees in various places. Can't seem to kill them for long with roundup. Also I used the chips after a year as mulch...guess what..sweetgum sprouts. HELP!!

Cut the shoots and paint them with a full-strength herbicide containing glyphosate.

We removed a cherry laurel, and used the method recommended by Douglas. It takes determination to go get the bottle every time and paint every shoot, but it works!

I know covering weeds with clear plastic will kill them...you might want to try this on a small section of the tree roots and see what happens. Some of these projects are very intense! Good luck!

Glyphosate worked well on killing this guy's lawn http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/pest-repeller/man-kills-40-000-sq-ft-lawn-453098 One little tree should be no problem eh?....It is also cheaper than bringing in a backhoe and digging it out.
