Vegetable gardening.

Here are a few pics of my vegetable garden which is doing very well despite the drought we are in here in Michigan (notice the dead lawn). I do think that the garden hose has become another appendage though!

My catnip has gone crazy this year. It really loves the heat. I let it bloom instead of cutting it and drying it because it helps attract bees to my garden.

This is my garden. Eight raised beds and a 30 x 40 foot area for vines.

This is how I plant my vining plants: I took a large tarp and laid it right over the grass, then cut holes in it (6 on one side, 3 on the other), then I amended the soi...

Hi Ann! So you live in Kalamazoo? We're in Bangor (on the way to South Haven). We're outside of town out in the country.

Thanks for the tip on the vines. We started our first garden this year and it's doing well but the cucumber and squash have taken over my little raised beds!

Nice layout. Would that be your Thyme in the bucket or mint?

Sherry Meyers ~ I pic I took is catnip that has taken on a life of it's own in a whiskey barrel. I also hove pineapple mint, apple mint, peppermint, citrus mint, spearmint, oregano, lemon balm, cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes all in either whiskey barrels or pots. We have a house bunny who LOVES herbs! He is one spoiled rabbit!

Good luck! We have been having water problems here in Atlanta too so I know what you are going through. Several years ago when we put in sod, i almost killed myself moving sprinklers. Hubby went to HD and bought spikes to which you attach pluming pipe and screw on a sprinkler head on top! The spikes have openings to connect several together with hoses and then cap off the last spike to close the loop. You can make these different heights and 360 to 180 degree sprinkler heads so as to ...»
control area to water. It was one of the best things he ever made for me! We used these for years until we could afford a sprinkler system!

Julee, thanks for posting more pics of your garden. It is a little late in the season for me to begin a garden, but you have re-kindled my desire to put in raised beds. I had a few when my kids were little but when they fell apart I didn't re-build. Now you make me recall how nice those veggies really were.

No Vivian, I will hopefully be adding one or two 2 x 6's to these beds.

I just planted Catnip this year heard it's really good for evening tea to relax not to say help my cat have a good time. I'm drying some now for tea and will make homemade cat toy. After you harvest your mint, what are you creating with it? Teas/tinctures/gifts? I have peppermint and spearmint didn't know catnip was that family how is the pineapple. Can these be added to our smoothies.

Also, what kind of camera are you using.

Hi Sherry Meyers! I have only ever grown it for my cats. This plant is probably five years old now. I just cut it back to the ground at the end of the season and it will come back year after year. I grow apple mint, pineapple mint, spearmint, peppermint, citrus mint and lemon balm for our spoiled house bunny. We have smoothies every day and I never thought to put any mint in them. Duh! We do put spearmint in our sun tea and it's delicious! ...»

And my camera is just a little point and shoot Canon Powershot AS1000 and I love it! I'd like to get the next generation as this one was purchased in 2009 and I think the color could be better. It has been a terrific camera. I'll always have a Canon!

I made the mistake of planting lemon balm directly into a flower bed. What a mistake! I just spent MANY hours ripping it out to reclaim the garden. Next up: get a large barrel or bin to hold it and keep it far away from a flower bed. What a lesson. It spreads through root and seed. (But it sure smells good and it is awfully nice added to iced tea).

I don't know how my spearmint and peppermint died but I do have a lovely verigated pineapple ...»

mint. (At least I think I still have it...we went gonzo weeding and I hope that wasn't destroyed)

I planted spearmint (one little root sprig) at the side of my house and now it covers a 4 x 24 foot area. I just mow it with the mower to keep it in check. All other mints go into pots. In the spring when they are root bound I take them out of the pot and cut the entire thing into quarters. I toss three quarters and replant one quarter and that seems to be the magic ratio. By the time it's root bound in the pot it's fall and time for it to go dormant for the winter. I also do this with oregano.

Yes, my oregano is consuming a good portion of a bed but I have common day lilies in that same area so they fight for dominance. The day lilies make me crazy because I can't get rid of them. They came with the house and are worse than cockroaches (which people speculate can withstand a nuclear blast.) haha.
