Spruce up That Bad Spot in Your Garden

Almost all of us have a spot in our garden that never looks good. Well, mine was at the bottom of the front steps where there is a small area that has never looked good for long. Limited space with concrete overrun from the foundation and sidewalk ,so we can't dig down. We lost our 7 lb. poodle mix we had had for 17 years and found this garden statue that reminded us of him...he was a shaggy dog, not a prissy poodle. The large granite rock is one from the base of our subdivision sign that is being replaced after 43 years. I think the variegated Lariope goes well with the variegated lacecap hydrangea. (This area can't take a raised mound because rain causes the soil to puddle mud on the walk.) This was difficult on us old folks because we had to dig up the lariope and move in some good dirt and the heavy rock! Monday I will get things cleaned up more.
I think this simple fix should thrive! Sometimes we have to just settle for greenery and not flowers. The Hosta I planted here was not happy. It was so pretty and I had hopes it would work.
Notice leaves beginning to fall on the grass and sidewalk! We will have leaves to deal with for the next 2 months! I will hose off the sidewalk Monday...just had to quit yesterday...ran out of steam!

I cant imagine what it must be like to have to wait until it gets down to the 80's for it to be comfortable to work outside. When it gets up to the 80's here in Michigan I find shelter from the heat! I do have some Hosta that will grow on the surface of the sun though.

HA! Thanks for the giggle. I was in London one summer and it was 85 and they were dying! We laughed because we had left Atlanta at about 100 with HIGH humidity in August! 85 was delightful to us! Both hubs and I take blood pressure meds which increases the effect of hot weather. The hosta was in stress because I don't think it was planted deep enough...the concrete was in the way! The Lairiope is a shallow root plant. I wish it had worked because it was beautiful. The heat in GA is awful, but it is the combination of the humidity with it that makes you nearly faint! You walk outside and it will almost slap you down!
