We have two Lennox heat pumps, that were installed over eleven years ago. Though I can't tell you about any other brands, ours have worked very well. Whatever you do, make sure you have digital thermostats to go with it. If there's an interruption in power, without a digital thermostat, you'll have to manually restart them.
  • check out York-it is a very efficient unit.
  • Please do not worry about brand for your heat pump purchase. What you need to understand all manufactures make and produce basement bargain units and high end units as well. The more you spend the higher the efficiency tends to be as well as the less noise it produces when it runs. One benefit of choosing a super high efficient one is not just lower operation cost and less noise, but the condensing unit is larger making it work much better during colder outside temps. Choose the contractor not the unit. Installation of any heating or cooling system and its success is dependent upon the quality of the installation contractor. I have seen low end units last forever because of details in installation was followed, yet I have seen top of the line well name brand units fail in just a few years. In your case you will be I assume putting in a new system not just a condensing unit. This is because of the newer R410A refrigerant that is now being used. Your older R-22 system is simply not efficient enough, nor is it practical to install just the condenser as the R-22 gas is being phased out and if there is ever a need to recharge it, it will cost way to much to do. With that said, be sure the contractor properly captures the older gas out of the unit, Its against the law to dump it into the air. Also he or she should be changing the pipes as well if at all possible as the oils in the pipes are not compatible with the new system. Although there are cleaning chemicals that can be used to flush the pipes, the cost of these chemicals to use them right is just about as much as the new pipes themselves. Plus the newer system runs on much higher pressures, and if the solder connections were poor on the older pipes, you risk a failure on the pipe. So choose the contractor, not the system he or she installs. AS far as make of unit, choose one that is common to the area in which you reside. Different makes have different exposures in the market place thought out the country. While one may be more popular others may be more easy to get anyone to your house to repair should the need arise.
