Type of spider

I took a picture of this spider and was wondering if anyone knows what kind it might be and if it can hurt my pets or do damage to my plants? I took some pictures of it next to a quarter to give an estimated size. The body is velvety looking. Thanks.

Looks more like a small tarantula, not really harmful. Maybe Google both Brown Recluse and Tarantula and see if that helps.

I'm not sure, but I'm inclined to agree with @Joedean Small about the Brown Recluse! Dead is best lol

I think it's probably a wolf spider. Check out this link to help you decide if it's a wolf or brown recluse. http://www.wikihow.com/Identify-a-Wolf-Spider

thats a baby tarantula we get them here during the rainy season, while they can inflict a nasty bite, they are relativly calm and harmless I always like to have them around, they eat their body weigh in bugs and other spiders every week

gee, could you get a closer shot of the eyes? Did you notice whether it had a third claw in the foot? Those are some of the things these identification sites ask - like you're going to get that close and friendly with a spider! Anyhow, this might help, if you are so inclined: http://www.insectidentification.org/spiders.asp

From what I have seen - wolf spiders move sideways like a crab and can move extremely fast. We had one when we lived in Sydney - scared the bejesus out of me when it ran!

I see them in Arkansas all the time. I'm pretty sure it's a wolf spider. They are pretty harmless but I hate any kind of spider. I have a poster in my office and it says their bite causes minor pain and they are poisonous. but not a serious risk.

Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas. The marking on the tail end isn't on any spiders that I've looked up so far for spiders on the web in images. The marking is unusual. We have a lot of wolf spiders here, and other spiders, but this one strikes me as just real different.

I had an infestation of these last fall- {{{shiver}}} I thought they looked like wolf spiders however I think wolf spiders tend to be much larger. I hope someone gives you a definitive answer because I'd like to know too!

if you didnt find your answer here, try your local co-operative extention or university, if you dont know where they are, google your county name + co op or state + co op most are pretty knowledgeable and of they dont know they can usually find the answer for you, here in Arizona the U of A has an excellent entomology department that will identify for free you might try enlaging the photos too, the definition on the rear isnt very visable in these photos

Brown recluse are not fuzzy, are all sizes and flat-looking(can slip between two boards nailed together. ) Look for the "VIOLIN" marking on it's back.
