Cautionary Tale About Salt

I took this picture outside an office building. You can see how the air conditioning unit is corroding. I'm assuming this is due to the maintenance people adding salt to the sidewalk in the winter.

Good learning lesson for us homeowners, though. Maybe this could be avoided by them initially setting the units back off the sidewalk?

What could they do to prevent further problems? Any ideas.

Jeff

get or make winter covers for the units. That close to the walkway, they definitely need protection from snow removal efforts. Check with your A/C contractor to see if they offer covers for sale. Just DO NOT operate units with the covers on!!

Thanks Michael for your comment. It's interesting that the office lost their AC the next time I visited them. I'm betting one of the coils in this condenser unit sprung a leak due to the salt corrosion.
