DIY $15 Outdoor Planter Boxes

I was wanting some planter boxes for my front door. With a few supplies from the hardware store I created these for $15 a pop. I painted them to match my exterior trim and I love them! You can see the full tutorial at http://www.shanty-2-chic.com/2012/04/15-outd...

I saved this post because I want to make some next year for my porch. Great Job! I too love that front door! It should be featured with closeups so we can see it better!

The door .... then the planter boxes... of different centuries, yet they work together! Nice...

I, too, vote for the door. I would put rock planters with that door, though.

Love the door, but the planter boxes are crowding the space.

I feel that the boxes stick out like a sore thumb. no offense intended. Then my eyes went to the door and it is gorgeous. I would put rock planters, only on a much smaller scale. Or actually, looking at this again...why not stain the planter boxes the same color as the door and then they would work? I know you want to keep them but I think now that the color is all wrong. If they were darker, they would match more and not take away from that beautiful door :)

I agree, the door deserves more understated planter boxes or urns. It is too beautiful to be outdone.

The door is awesome! The planters are too modern, don't match the door. Looks too crowded.

The planter boxes need to be moved in front of the post. They also need to be changed out to reflect a larger plant with a variety of smaller colorful plants surrounding the center larger plant. In doing this you will make the entryway into the space INVITING.

yes Jeanne, that's what it is...they need to be in front of the posts and leave a wider path to that gorgeous door! making a grander entrance...

That might do it. Just move stuff around till it looks good.

Thanks guys... Unfortunately they aren't posts and they stand at much different lengths from the door itself (hard to see in this little pic) So... I know I want planters. Just hard to know where I want them. They do match all my dormers and trim though, which you can't see in the picture either. I have replanted them now with much taller plants... Hopefully I can keep them alive ;-)

I think I'd use smaller, less "stand-out" planters, either up against the walls on either side of the door or in front of the pillars. The way they look in the picture takes up too much room on the way to the gorgeous front door, thus taking away from the beauty of that door. The door is lovely and the planters detract from its beauty.

I think I'd use smaller, less "stand-out" planters, either up against the walls on either side of the door or in front of the posts. So, while the planters are very pretty, they take up too much room in front of the door, taking the viewer's eye away from the beauty of that door. I would also make the planters in a different style, more in line with the style of the house and that door.
