HELP! I live in southwesrern PA and would like to plant my new hydrangeas in large pots. Has anyone ever done this? I saw a picture and they were beautiful but will they winter over? Pots I have are approximately 3 (the pot I purchased them in). PLEASE HELP ME!

I had one in a pot for 3 years and it had stunning foliage, but not a single bloom! I put it in the ground that spring and it was beautiful with vibrant dark rose blooms!
  • I have many shrubs in pots and a couple baby hydrangeas and I do nothing with mine in zone 7; however, in lower zones I highly suggest putting them in a protected spot and covering them in leaves and putting them in a group against a wall, fence, or under a tree. If you are in zone 6, then doing this should work out fine. Just remember they will need watered until the ground freezes. Even if you do not see the limbs -you do not want them to dry out. Do you know what varieties you bought? There are many that are great bloomers while others are finicky. Good luck and happy gardening.

The smaller the pot the more protection they will need during winter. If you can't situate them as the Garden Frog suggests, I would bring them into an unheated garage.
