How can I modernize this piece and make it a tv stand so that the remote will work with the cable box or should I pass?

  • I would remove the door fronts and replace the panel inserts with glass. Take the back side off of the cabinet so air can breath as well. Then of course use the draws to hold DVD,s games etc. A good finish using a chalk type paint will make this a perfect place to put the TV on.

Great idea, Woodbridge. Robin, deals often don't seem to last long on Craigslist, so I wouldn't think about this for too long.

Steve, the price was initially $35 when I found it. I noticed they changed that to $195! It must have been a big oops.

Great ideas, Woodbridge. I didn't think about taking the back off or the glass panel inserts. Thanks!

Ventilation is key...so the open back is a great idea...the fronts do not need to be removed if a device or system like this is used. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=20276&site=ROCKLER

I'd remove the doors on either side exposing the interior drawers and completely remove the drawers in the middle replacing them with shelves for your cable box and DVD player. I've given up on using glass in any of my repurpose projects. Unless you have a source for pre-cut pieces that just happen to fit (check Hobby Lobby) it's not cost effective. As for refinishing, that's a personal choice. I'd use Restore A Finish.

If you want to leave the doors intact, you can get a remote control that operates on an RF system, or a remote that use the IR system, both with mouse tabs glued to the individual equipment and work very well. For ventilation, it is a good idea to remove the back panels.
