Top plant is a Dracena.and the bottom is what we always called a Dieffenbachia or a Dumb Cane. My grandmother had one by her sliding glass door that she had staked straight up. It would grow like crazy and when it would get tall enough to touch the ceiling she would break it off, stick in in the soil and start more. Everywhere there is a line on the stalk, it will grow roots. I have one, too. Neither need much special care. Indirect lighting and water when soil gets dry.

@Cathy Murphy@ Thank you! I Wiki'd Dracena and Dieffenbachia, just to be sure I was right in my thoughts. As I have written in the past on this site, I get crazy when people answer, sounding so positive, instead of saying, 'they think, maybe'. The only 'rainbow' plants I can find are caladiums (angel wings) and coleus (flame nettle) also those awful, ugly, tasteless multicolour roses! There are many philodendrons, but the most common is a heart shaped leaf climber, nothing like the above pic'!

I thought dumb cane plants were standing plants

@Donna Marie P They are. This one was probably too far from a light source and searching, so it became bent. If you read Wiki, it says they like light, heat and more light.

Cathy Murphy is correct for both. The diffenbachia is poisonous for smaller animals.

@MarianMokki Robinson I heard it's called a dumb cane because when cut, the sap (like the poinsettia) is milky white and runs freely. If licked, the tongue might swell and become numb plus more bad symptoms.

Thx all ... I'll hang the Diffenbachia so no kids/cats will get at it

The Dumb Cane can really be either. If it is cut back the stalk will get thicker and if staked it will grow straight. If you look at the picture, there was a main stalk that looks like it had been cut off. When they had plants in the center of the Parkersburg (WV) Mall they had these growing everywhere. Some grew very tall and the smaller stalked ones did like these. Many household plants are poisonous to small animals and even babies/small children.

The top one is sometimes called a Dragon Plant? I bought a small one when our son started kinger. Will his is going to be 36 in Nov. So I gave it to him. It is a slow grower and if the stalk gets broken, just stick the broken one in the dirt near the plant. In a while where it was broken you will get TWO stalks growing and the one you put in the dirt will start growing again. After it broke a few times because of a flying ball or a clumsy me I had many and I just kept sticking them in the pot. as it/they grow they drop the bottom leaves. Like the Pine trees do. By the time I gave it to our son it was about 51/2foot, At one time when they got tall I braided them, It Looked Cool! And the soccer ball took it apart. Just don't leave it outside when it freezes. Good Luck and have fun with your. It will bring you a little happiness.
