Smooth finish

This is my first attempt at redoing a table top. I used a lot of Mod Podge to put sheet music on the table top, then I used minwax waterbased polycleric over the modge podge. I sanded and did multiple coates, but I can not get a smooth finish and I have deep grooves still. What I assume is from not sanding the Mod Podge. My question is, should I try something different over the minwax like a laquer or something? help!!

  • You need to put thicker coats on the top and allow them to flow out smoothly, With several thin coats being used they are not flowing into the lower scratched groves filling them. Do not mix different product types or you risk failure that may not be able to be restored. Try just filling the groves first let dry and feather sand them so you build up on the lower areas. Your on the right track, only spreading the coats to thin.
