Painting a laminate shower surround top to bottom

I have a stand up shower that has a laminate surround top to bottom. I cannot afford to purchase a new surround. I was going to clean well with TSP, rough up a bit and then paint with some type of waterproof paint. This is in a guest bathroom and will not be used on a daily basis. Has anyone ever tackled a job like this? Recommendations? Thanks! -Sharon

They actually make paint for tubs and showers, my husband painted our shower and you couldn't tell it was painted. We got ours at Menards, but am sure any big box store carries something similar to that.

Thanks @Jamie! Can you give me the brand name? I lived near a Menard's in the Midwest but none in the Florida area.

Rust-oleum Tub & Tile Refinishing kit. It comes in different colors and says you can use it on ceramic tile, porcelain, fiberglass, acrylic, cast iron and steel. Don't know about laminate, but woulnd't think it would be that much different.

I painted my shower stall with Rustoleum Tub and Tile paint 3 yrs ago. Still looks good. Got it at Home Depot online. The paint kind not the spray. I did not clean with TSP or any other products besides brush and ajax or dawn..dry it-then lightly hand sand w a lighter grit sandpaper then wipe that down, dry it -then paint it. I had to put towels under bathroom door for 3 days and left fan running from the smell. But it still looks great and cant see brush strokes and it only cost 25.00 or so for kit!!

@Anex08 Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and paint it. Will let you know how it goes.

How is everyone’s painted shower surround lasting?

  • Janice Janice on Dec 07, 2023

I've not done this myself but a friend used the Rustoleum kit to refurbish her laminate builder grade kitchen counter to look like granite and it has worn well for 5-6 years. I imagine that the Rustoleum bath/shower kits would be similar. They make really good products....just be sure to follow the directions provided.

Why not use a Special undercoat/Primer for Laminate and then paint over, or cover with Contact.

Thanks for the info but about 9 years too late in responding. I’ve since sold the home.
