Looking to redesign my bedroom and I think I have a winner!

When they advertise tropical hardwood solids what does that really mean??? Can someone take a look and tell me what I can expect? I am loving the design and the modern construction, I think modern platform beds will go well with my contemporary themed home. Looking forward to some feedback before I buy, cheers!

There are MANY exotic tropical hardwoods available like Cocobolo, Bocote, Amboyna Burl to name a few. Most are pricey at best and some countries , like Thailand, have listened to the native peoples and have banned logging in their country (Thai forestry laws changed in1988) 70% of Belize land remains primary forest (untouched) and 45% of land in Belize is legally protected. Costa Rica has now protected nearly 26% of the area of its country in national parks or reserves. As the push for ...»
these treasures persists, the rest of the "unnecessary trees" are cut and burned creating area devoid of the natural habitats of thousands of endangered wildlife that depend on the forests to survive...Hardwood farms are at least an alternative to the destructive practices of that harvest. Please think it over and research before you buy exotic...Best wishes...JL

John, JL is right, exotic sounds awesome, but think twice before you buy. You may get a similar bed that is locally made as well. Platform beds are really cool, I love the style and they will easily fit into your modern home. Good choice!

You didn't give us a link John, so I had to do some sleuthing to find this place, but the image title says it's from "platformbedsonline.com"... is this correct? If so, this page here: http://www.platformbedsonline.com/platform-b... seems to be where these beds are all hosted. A lot of these stores have similar items to other ...»
stores, so I did a quick Google Image search of the first bed on that page and it looks like the other place that has it is here: http://www.tansu.net/shop-by-collection/kond... and if you read the footer notes on that page, it says that it's made from "plantation grown teak" in Indonesia. According to Wikipedia, "plantation teak" has a relatively short growth cycle, and so it is easily felled and then re-grown, creating a sustainable ecosystem. For this reason, plantation teak is used for eco-friendly commercial purposes (eg furniture) as well as forestry management (ie ecological) purposes. Check out the Wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantation_Teak

So, in a nutshell, this wood isn't exactly "exotic" rather than methodically cultivated specifically with the intention of being sustainable. It's foreign, for sure, since teak plantations pretty much only exist in Indonesia and Thailand. I suppose it depends on how you define "exotic." But yes, you can probably rest easy, knowing that your purchase is likely an eco-friendly one.

Wow, I feel like Sherlock Holmes! :P
