@TheHoneycombHome did exactly this! I'm sure she can offer you great advice from her experience. :) Also, check out her post on this here!: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/basement/garage-converted-to-a-family-room-4032666

If you have dirt and rain that tend to come into the garage then you need to build some drainage ditches around your garage. Fill with rock then a pipe and recover with dirt and grass seed(I'm sure your local hardware store can help you with planning how to do that). Or you need to clean your drain out! Another thing you can do is build a sub floor so that if water or dirt come into the garage it don't ruin your floor. You could either buy the lumber, look on craigslist, habitat for hummanities, use skids from local factories. If you don't want to change the garage door out you could build a partial drop ceiling around the hardware inside the garage and paint the inside of the door to match your theme or you could sub it out for something that would work if you decide to convert it back to a garage like a sliding barn door(which you can build)!

@Melisa Paul Howard Agree. Continuing water on your garage floor is not a good thing! Talk to them about a "French Drain". You can get treated lumber to make an elevated floor. DO NOT use pallets because they are not treated which invites termites...which are plentiful in Georgia! Then use treated planking. Those rubber "fit together pieces" available at the home improvement stores would be a good covering because they can be snapped apart, washed, dried and put back in place and they do not fade! Use black or dark rugs if desired. Paint the garage walls a light color. Good luck!
