What color should I repaint this?

I just picked up this piece from Goodwill, not sure what color to paint it! I have tan walls and wood flooring. Accent colors are yellow, peach, brown, and gold. Thanks!

Mint would be beautiful with gold hardware and accents! My inspiration came from this beauty: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/dressers/mint-gold-french-provincial-dresser-3924836

@Hannah V That is BEAUTIFUL!! I love it! So retro! But yet classic.

@Rachael O'riordan @Hannah V is right that piece is gorgeous but i guess it would depend on where you are going to put it..pick up a color from the room you put it xx
  • Anna @Annabode Anna @Annabode on Sep 15, 2014
Some kind of blue or green I think…it seems like all your colors are very warm, and an using a cool color would balance the room and make it an accent piece. I like Hannah's idea of mint!

I'd kick it up a notch and paint it a lovely shade of pink or turquoise, trim the edges/or paint the knob gold!

A burnt orange imo would make it pop.
  • Home on Hidden Oaks Home on Hidden Oaks on Sep 16, 2014
Paint the majority of it white and the edges/trim a metallic gold! Add some new hardware and it will really pop!

Whatever color matches the faux leather, ostrich or crocodile I would put on the doors and front panel of the drawer; I would also either repaint or change out the door handles/knobs.

It's hard to say not knowing what your style is: Retro, country, modern, traditional, etc. My very first thought was white- always safe. But sounds like you like lots of color. Yellow is always fun, if you want it to be a focal point I would go Yellow! Brown is always safe. Don't think I would do peach though. Just my opinion;)

It looks like it's missing the two bottom pieces. You do know that it's an over the toilet cabinet, right? Storage is storage, put it where you need it. Whatever you do, do not sand this piece. It is most likely particle board with a hard cardboard backing. Just paint right over it. Since you have yellow in your house as an accent already, I would paint it a bright sunny yellow. That trend is very in still. Spray paint the knobs in a metallic bronze. Definitely weight the bottom down with books /cookbooks so it is not so top heavy, or secure the top to the wall. Good luck.

@Design 29 Studio It seems much too big to be an over the toilet piece, but maybe you're right! :) Thanks for the tips on the sanding!

It definitely does look like particle board as a new chalkboard paint fan I would suggest using it as it covers anything to make it look great. I also agree to make the color work with your room and décor. The right red would look great against the yellow wall or turquoise would pop and be really pretty against the yellow. Or a cream with a yellow tint would blend the piece in with the room. good luck.

I agree with chalk paint also I would go for the bright cheery color!!! Yellow and change out the knobs!!! Just a suggestion my dear!!
  • CK CK on Sep 16, 2014
It would be nice to see the rest of the room to see what color this piece could/should be. Also what use will it have? But in the end, it's paint and it can always be redone until you find the perfect color.
  • Lee Lee on Sep 16, 2014
You can't go wrong with antique white...and a little bit of brown glaze.
  • Cindy Haskell Cindy Haskell on Sep 16, 2014
If it were my piece, I would paint it a dark green (like a hunter green) to offset the other colors you have in that room. Good luck with your piece!

chalkboard paint, some of you are speaking about it and particle board. Whats the advantage of using it? Over just a regular spray paint or canned paint. I'd like to know. Thank you.

Ooooo!!! I just got it. You should make it into an Asian cabinet with a stencil on the front..

I have done several pieces of furniture using Annie Sloan paint. Her product is awesome! No prep work (stripping or sanding) required, just make sure you clean the cabinet so its free of dirt and grime then pull out the paint brushes! Her paint is pricey, but it goes a long way. Search “annie sloan painted furniture” in Pinterest and you’ll gets loads of inspiration! That piece is not an over the toilet cabinet....too big for that.

I've been a very successful designer for 30 years and have an eidetic memory for colour, but I still never can answer this question - there's too little information about light, colour and furnishings in your room! So, I will tell you to do what I would do: sit down with a few colour chips from a paint store and hold them one by one up against your wall, furniture, etc. Live with them a while. Tape them in place and look at different times a day under different light. Move them around. When you start to like one more than the others, then you know that's the one. After all, you want the one to please you, right? Oh, and btw, sand that cabinet well, and us 2 coats top notch primer. It is not made of real wood, and it will not behave like wood while you are painting!

I'd leave it just the way it is. It's hard to improve on perfection

@COONIE Just in case you didn't know that Chalk Paint ad Chalk Board Paint aren't the same. One of the best known chalk paints is Annie Sloan. You could Google it or look on hometalk or Pinterest.

@Pamela Think you are brave and very talented to take on kitchen cabinets. I am only getting started with chalk paint, so big projects like that are far in the future for me. Congrats!

I'm confused on this because others above have said *not* to sand this kind, but one said to sand. Is there a certain primer that can be used on this, before painting? I have some that I want to paint also, but with regular paint and not the chalk paint.

Ha! New is fine if you want to pay the price! But when you add yr own ideas to inexpensive pieces it makes the piece feel very personal! ..not to mention how good you feel about saving $$$ !! Good luck with yr pieces!
  • Cindy Haskell Cindy Haskell on Sep 16, 2014
Did you read Patti Phillips email above...Annie Sloan is an awesome paint to use....just make sure everything is clean, and pull out your paint brushes...no sanding necessary!! Good luck! And make sure you post the pictures after.

White wash. Thin the paint so the grain shows through.

I am one for traditionally saying stain instead of paint, but this is one occasion when I will say paint. Why? Because this is a frog than needs a kiss! Not much style in this piece, so give it some. Paint flat black. Then put a wallpaper with an open pattern of white with black branches (I love the ones with birds on the branches) (or you could cut out a red bird and glue it on) or flowers in the wallpaper; put it only on the back of the inside. (You can use the left over wallpaper in other projects later on!) Then put on white porcelain knobs.

I have done a couple of pieces of my own using my own chalk paint. I have included the "recipe" for you below: 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup Plaster of Paris Stir with straw or other longer utensil until no longer lumpy. Add 3/4 cup of a water based paint to your plaster of paris and water mix. Again stir well. You can use ANY COLOR I have used white, antique white, lacey white, pale honey (a very pretty light yellow) and I have used a nice beautiful steel grey/bluish color. The pieces have turned out beautifully!

@Anita This recipe covered an entire coffee table top and bottom with two coats. And actually had leftover. I think Rachael will have plenty to cover her piece here. But if you feel like you may need more you can double up on the "ingredients". Sanding after drying (Which takes no time at all) has also been very easy when giving that Shabby/Chic look. I have been pretty successful using it.

Would paint and add some contrasting stencil lines or such to dress it up a little.
