Can you tile over marble or do you need to put something over it before tiling

Yes you can. I would suggest that you install Schluter Ditra system over the top of the marble.

But the marble must be well fastened with no loose tiles.

Also you must be aware of the additional weight that will be applied to that area of the floor, will the current framing allow this without reaching its limit on weight. Remember as more weight is applied to the floor it begins to bounce which will cause any new application of tile to have ...»

issues with grout and tile cracking.

But if it can hold the weight using the Ditra will assure against cracks and provide a good base for the new tiles.

you will have to scuff up or deglaze the marble if you tile right over and don't use the ditra but I would use the ditra mat.

Mark, The Ditra mat? Are you thinking of Kerdi? I was thinking about that as well, but depending upon the quality of the floor I think a uncoupling membrane would be a better fit. What do you think about it? But I would agree as long as the floor is in excellent shape then the Kerdi mat would be OK.

well really only difference is kerdi would be for shower stalls so yes you can go up the sides with it, ditra you can't. I don't know what Susan has but ditra I think will hold better if it's just the floor.

    They both made of polyethylene.
