Remove ugly black streaksfront steep roof

We replaced our roof in 2007, and now there are black algae streaks, and they look so bad. We tried something we got online, but it didn't work. Any ideas of how to remove these streaks from a very steep roof, that is not too hard.

Pressure washing, but I would recommend hiring someone.
  • Before you power wash as Adrianne suggested, which is one method of doing this, I suggest that you contact the roofing company for warranty. While all roofs will streak over time, this is happening to fast for a roof of its age. One way to prevent this is to install zinc Strips along the top edges of the roof. These metal strips leach off zinc at a very slow rate. zinc will kill any mildew or algae that grows. The higher cost the shingles the more zinc is in them. Shingle companies started to remove this material from shingles in the later 70's as a way to control costs as oil prices rose so did the cost of the shingle. One factoid. People are always getting their heating ducts cleaned for fear of mold in them. What they do not realize is galvanized duct work is zinc covered and it will not allow mold to grow so there is no need to do this. The roofing company can install this metal on the roof for you. .

You have to get a product with zinc in it to kill the algae. Once you have it cleaned, you can put zinc strips at the top of the roof to wash down and continually clean it. Google this on line. People began to notice that where the vents were located, the roof below was clean and that is when they realized zinc was the solution. There are professionals that will clean it (cost us $250 and an annual care cleaning for $90!) Hubs said the cost was not more than an expensive dinner and was worth more to keep Madam happy! You can contact a professional...it is worth it and the roof looks new! You may be on the cusp of when they started putting zinc in the new shingles. And if you have lots of trees as we do, you will get the black streaks! Post before and after.
    • @Jeanette S Actually they started removing the zinc from the shingles because of rising costs in asphalt used to make the shingle. So to counteract that they removed this product from them. This gave them another reason to charge more for the better quality shingles. This is another reason that you get what you pay for when choosing a roofing product. But your correct, you can purchase zinc strips at roofing suppliers. They simply slip under the top few courses of shingles and on larger roofs again about midway down. Does not clear up the existing stains so a cleaning is suggested, but will over time will prevent additional staining.
