I achieved a farmhouse country restyle for my builders grade oak cabinet kitchen by adding a beadboard backsplash, wood

corbels, painted cabinets and I did all the work myself for under $500.00. I incorporated some great thrifted pieces and removed some doors for an open shelf look. My favorite feature is my handmade curtain under my sink...very vintage farmhouse.

I love the final look of my new restyled room and it was so econimical.

Like that you took a couple doors off for the open feel. Was wondering if you know if the innermost door panels can be removed and replaced with glass?

Janet - I just realized you're right up the road from us! We're in Spotsylvania. I'm so glad to see this style around here. My realtor advised me strongly against a farmhouse style for resale, but I love it so much!

Hey Angela...I think your realtor is wrong...that is what would sell me on a house before almost anything else. I saved the removed doors and the next homeowner can always pop them back on.

Hi Angela & Janet!! I was beginning to feel all alone here in Va. I've been meaning to send Janet a note (good intentions = "ROUND TUIT") lol. I LOVE your Island and was especially glad to see yours in black. I was going to paint mine black last year but I only got as far as thinking about it. Definitely gonna elevate it on the priority list. Angela, you're closer as I live in the Massaponax area so there are 3 of us now. We'll have to work on getting more Va. gals to share ideas with. Glad to see you both!!

I'm listening Susan :) You can actually browse specifically by location. On the left side of the homepage scroll down until you see "Filter by location." This is only available in certain areas but Virginia is one of them.

So which one of you actually does the MOST cooking or spends the most time in there???? Usually men are the ones who prefer white (sorry guys - don't mean to stereo type) You can have your white and eat it too by adding other accents of color w/accessories, window treatments, placemats, towels, colorful kitchenware. The possibilities are endless!!

Have seen a few do it yourself chalk paint concoctions as the paint is VERY expensive!! Anyone have a certain recipe they love?

What about the floor. Is that the original floor or have you replaced it. I just want to tear up the tile and whatever is under that, sand and refinish and just deal with that.

Janet, how are the cabinets holding up? Is the paint chipping? I really want to try painting cabinets in a kitchen or bath one day but am afraid they won't hold up to every day use. BTW, your kitchen is gorgeous!

I painted my dark brown cabinets in my last house & they did great. The key is the prep. Charles Peace can give details. When I did get a chip, I touched it up. I would rather do that than live with something I despise.

@Allison - Homemade chalk paint is not worth the time or effort. Anything you make using latex paint is not chalk paint it just has grit added. Yes, an entire kitchen could be expensive but the look (to me) would be worth it. CeCe Calwell's paint is 32.95 per quart - I will have it available on my website the first week in April. www.shabbydaze.com

I have done a whole kitchen for a friend using only 2 cans of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and at $36.95 a can, I would say that is pretty darn affordable. Keep in mind I did not have to buy primer or that toxic TSP stuff to prep the cabinets. Didn't even take the doors off the hinges! No odor and dried in 30 minutes. What's not to love about Annie's fabulous paints?
