Painting Stairs

Low Cost Stair Railing Makeover

With a tiny budget (Under $10) and a little bit of work, I was able to completely transform the oak stair railing and bannister.

Using minimal supplies, I stained the hand rail and painted the balusters white. For more detailed instructions and step-by-step photos please visit: http://www.thekimsixfix.com/2012/01/stair-ma...

I agree with John C, I have painted and stained alot in my life, I never was able to buy for under $10.00, so be honest really how much did it cost you?

Well, I think it looks lovely! It's all about finding the look that you have in mind, and if that's your look, it's right on! I have painted railings too and I love them.

I would have painted the top and bottom of the stair rail black and left the wood stained on everything else.

Is that gel stain? Please be sure to never actually touch the rail. In a year, it will wear off.

It's all about what you like. If you wanted to call attention to the stairs, you have. Well done. Cost wise, in my area it would cost more than $10 for the supplies to do this job.

Hmmm. I like both before and after. It depends on the rest of the house.

The rails and balusters look so much better now. You did a great job. As always, everyone has different tastes, and you have made them reflect your taste. Enjoy!

I prefer the real oak over the painted look.

Check the blog, she only bought the stain because she had everything else on hand. Well done Money-Pit. The color change does update it and by using stain you still have the wood grain. I like both versions, hubby would definitely prefer the 1st as "wood should never be painted!" per him. Me, which ever trips the heart. If you love it, then it's right for you.
