Can formica be painted?

I want to change the color of an old bathroom cabinet and am curious if the formica laminate can be painted?

Yes, it can Jenny. There are at least two companies that make a product kit for this, but you can also do it yourself. I'm linking you to posts where Hometalkers share their experiences. I just repainted my cabinets with craft paint that I bought at Walmart.  I found the tutorial on YouTube.  It took about 2 hours to paint.  I put a clear coat on it, now I'm waiting for it to dry. It looks beautiful!

I meant to add if you go the DIY craft paint way and want more 'depth' which translates to more realistic look, I highly recommend doing a coat or two of poly between each color you add to your faux granite finish.

Absolutely yes! When we first bought our house almost 5 years ago, I decided to paint the basic builder grade vanity (the super cheap laminate kind) and the mirror/medicine chest in one of our bathrooms as a 'temporary' fix. I used the same steps I use to paint my furniture. I wiped it down with liquid sandpaper/deglosser, primed it with Zinsser Bullseye 123 primer (latex), and used semi-gloss black (latex) paint. I did not use any protective top coat. Despite being the most heavily used bathroom sink in our house, it has held up great--so great that I have not felt the need to replace it yet. Then a year ago, I painted the vanity in a second bathroom. 
 
My #1 recommendation is to definitely use a good bonding primer and the best quality paint you can afford.

yes....go for it!! You do not need a kit..i have done this as have many, clean, sand a little, prime well, paint, poly... super! People paint laminate furniture all the time, this is not different except for the use it gets, there fore the poly depending where it will be used. Shari above says she did not use poly, I did because I used latex paint.@Shari Love your bathroom, the black is genius! Very Classy!
