i'm constantly redecorating and moving furniture around... {the below photos are old... we actually have alow smaller tan sectional where the couch is now} ...the side chairs and other furniture is basically the same. {minus the ladder shelf on the left, the coffee table, the side table, and all the kitchy stuff on the shelf} i'm starting all over {much to my husband's chagrin}... how can i make my tv not jump out so much but still address that wall creatively?! any suggestions?

Traci, We recently went through this whole process as well...One of our concerns was minimize the after effects of having two kids spend a full day watching TV in the living room. Our solution ...remove the TV from the equation. We relocated it up into the master bedroom. This freed up a space, we then brought in some furniture from the seldom used library and not have a formal sitting area. This project had some "side projects" and I wrote about them in my blog. http://kmswoodworks.wordpress.com/2011/08/01/why-the-weekends-seem-too-short/ I writing this from our new couch...Its a wonder we did not think of this before.

Traci, I would paint the wall a nice dark color to accent it. Place the TV on the wall at a nice viewing height and buy something simple and contemporary for the media shelf. What is happening now, is that your eye is wandering because of the asymmetry created by the ladder shelf and the TV. I am glad you got rid of the ladder shelf. The exposed shelf and the nick knacks on it makes the space look disorganized. Place elongated lamps on either side of the TV OR place 2 long paintings that relate to each other on either sides of the TV. You can also place lamp shade that match with the paintings on 2 side tables as well. Placing the TV in the center will stabilize the view of the beholder and the art and the lighting will give the needed effect. If you can afford it, buy a cabinet with doors the close over the TV. Keep it out of sight when you are not using it.

yeah, the ladder shelf was driving me nuts... it's one of those pieces that you don't want to get rid of because you spent money on it, and you don't have money to get something new.. {i'm moving toward white furniture...b/c i have to dust everyday!} you can't tell from the picture but the tan is actually darker than it looks, so i think a dark accent wall may make the room darker. but i am thinking of having my dad build a low modernized shelf that stretches along the wall to replace the tv stand. {like in the picture below} and mount the tv on the wall. i want to paint the tall shelf and low shelf with the same finish. and i just want to do something interesting for the bare wall on the opposite side of the tv. i'm a painter so i could do some paintings. but i enjoy the thrill of the hunt for a perfect piece too! i love the idea of the photo placement around the tv too... my husband and i are a mix between retro mid-century modern and vintage, shabby chic... very difficult to marry those 2 styles!

How about getting rid of the TV altogether. Just spent a week with the in-laws in their Maine house without a TV. Wonderful week.

I would build cabinets, wall to wall, and provide a space for the tv. It would then "blend" in, and provide you with so much storage, you could do away with your other shelving units.

Getting rid of the tv isn't an option. I considered moving it upstairs, but then it is basically rendered useless to anyone else in the house 14 days of the month when my husband is on night shift and sleeping during the day. Our loft is right off the master. Not to mention, I can't do without my dvr jeopardy and hgtv design star! I like the idea of the low contemporary shelf and mounting the tv on the wall {thanks Yamini}. The taller shelf was built by my dad, so that piece has to stay. But it will probably be painted. The tv stand could stand to go! Great suggestions! Any ideas for the wall, besides the photo collage/placement around the tv?

Well I am glad you are heading in the right direction. People always think a darker color will make a dark room darker this is actually not correct. A lighter color actually makes a dark room duller. Try a sample and see how it will look. It will give that wall a pop for sure.

Glad the ladder is gone!. Push the TV and stand to the middle of the wall for symmetry. Add a torchier lamp on the left in the corner by the window. This will balance out the height of the bookcase. Try painting the back of the bookcase wall the same color as the walls. Remove a shelf or 2. Keep in mind that they do not all need to be evenly spaced. Add some accessories with more substantial size. You can even prop a picture in there. Use the rule of 3s when arranging bookcases. . . 1/3 books, 1/3 open space, 1/3 accessories. After that, some sleek window panels will soften all of the hard surfaces.

You are so lucky to have a Dad like that! I was just wishing that my Dad was alive to help me landscape this place.... Why not have him build another exact shelf unit for the other side & put shelves with cabinet doors below & above the TV. Like a bridge between the two tall shelf units. Thus creating a wall unit. It will give the room a focal point. Then put some larger items on the shelves. I think, lack of symmetry & clutter bothers you.

Agreed! I already got some more tan paint for the back of the shelves. I really am lucky to have such a talented dad! I like the idea of a painting leaning against the wall too... Great suggestions! Thanks everyone!
