Dish washer/Garbage disposal issues

Home Repair Tutor is there a way to stop the liquid waste from the garbage disposal from backing up into the dishwasher? I don't have a clue how to stop this from happening.

The dishwasher drain should have a bend in it to prevent back flow both directions. Same principal as the sink trap. I'd check that first. Check to see if the drain spout for the dishwasher under the sink is one standard piece too. Sometimes the dishwasher drain is added later by tapping into the existing sink drain, and the location of it may be off. Also, the vent for the sink drain may be clogged and not providing air for good flow. Hard to be specific without looking at it.

    Thanks
  • @Virginia B , Some times a dishwasher drain line falls down from it's mount under the kitchen sink. This will cause a siphon effect. If this is what you are dealing with, first check to see that the drain line from the garbage disposal to the dishwasher is clear. You can clear it by removing the drain line where it is attached to the disposal and then use a shop vac to clear any debris. Then re-mount the line by running it through a u style clamp as high up inside the sink base as you can. The goal is to have a curve (arch) in the drain line that is higher than the sink strainer. Good luck!
