Spice Drawer Make Over

Have you ever stood in the isle of the grocery store trying to remember if you have a certain spice a recipe calls for? I know I have. Here is how to solve that problem.
There is nothing more frustrating than planning a grocery store trip only to return home to find that you don't have the spice you thought you had. Back to the grocery store again. Or, even worse, wasting money buying a spice "just in case" only to find out you already had two at home. Ugh! I set out to make my spice drawer have everything I would ever need and made it visible so as I am running out of something I can add it to my list.
I used these Ball jars because the fit nicely in the drawer I was planning on using. Also, spices don't keep forever, so working with smaller amounts and replenishing more often will give you better results in your cooking and baking.
I painted the tops of the jars white, totally not needed. In fact, if I were to do it again I would skip this step...not worth the effort or time. I found some cute colored scrapbook stickers and just used a Sharpie to write the names on. I put them in the drawer in alphabetical order so that I can quickly find them. But, what spices should every good kitchen have? I consulted one of my favorite all time cookbooks The New Basics Cookbook for a complete list of spices. Don't have this cookbook? Come on over to www.slightlycoastal.com for a full list of all the spices a well equipped kitchen should have.

Taking a pic with cell phone is a great idea I will have to add that tip to my post. If you stock it with everything from the start, filling in the gaps in your spice drawer, you'll always have everything you need but the cell phone pic would be a good reminder.
