New Bathroom Slate Tile

We bought this tile on a clearance sale. After it sat around for about a year we finally got around to installing it. Oh, and it turned out that every piece was 1/8 out of square in the 12 inches. And as with most slate tile the thickness varied by almost a 1/4 inch from the thickest to the thinnest pieces. But I tackled it, and think it looks pretty good. Haven't grouted it yet, but will be doing that soon!

Looks great! There's nothing like the feel of slate under bare feet........sort of like acu-pressure.

Celeste, we did the same thing! Bought beautiful marble tile. . . had to square each tile. What a job, but it was nice when finished. Your floor is VERY nice!

Beautiful...you overcame sever problems and it turned out great. We have never used slate tiles and probably will never tackle it! Great job!

I used the same stuff in my kitchen. Definitely seal it ahead of time (I sealed ours before installing) and I'd recommend using a grout bag rather than a grout float. A grout bag will let you squeeze the grout directly in between the tiles and will minimize grout getting into the rough slate surface where you don't want it.

We purchased some slate tiles that I fell in love with at Lowe's about a year ago. They are still sitting in the boxes in the garage. We purchased them with the bathroom in mind, but after a lot of reading on the internet decided to forgo that room. Now, I'm not sure where we'll lay them. Thinking front porch....maybe.

Your project looks great and a lot of work squaring up all the tiles, got to love the ...»

different thicknesses too, makes you really appreciate the job when your done.

Beautiful job! Slate is a pain in the *** to lay. We've done a bathroom oand our laundry room and it's always a challenge to level it, but you can't beat the look when finished! KMS is absolutely correct. We learned that the hard way when we grouted before sealing and ended up with grout in all the little crevases, some of which you don't notice because of the variation in color. 2 hours on our knees with a wire brush taught us that lesson!

We laid slate in our kitchen, laundry and entryway. We sealed before grouting and LOVE the final results!
