How to Build a Hobbit Home

Below you'll see what looks like a home fit for a Hobbit, but it's really known as an "earthbag" home and while I woudn't recommend making this into a permanent dwelling these little homes certainly do have a lot of character. These simple shelters offer a cost effective solution for a sturdy home in many war-torn and poor areas of the world, and would also be great for chicken coops, backyard sheds, or even a playhouse.
They're fairly simple to build, but don't confuse that with "easy" - they do require a fair bit of work. Here you can see how the foundation is being scooped out, with dirt pushed into the bags that will form the walls.
With the foundation dug and outlined, it's time to start stacking the earthbags to create the dome.
Tamping down the bags ensures a tight fit.
Using a rope attached to a piece of wood helps maintain an accurate circumference.
Larger poles sit in between layers of the earthbags and offer support for an opening, or a window.
