Butterfly dancer

This is a window decoration I used to make tons of. It's made with real butterfly wings and flowers I pressed myself. Sure enjoyed them.

Ah Julee, you've done it again!! This is gorgeous, I could look at things like this all day long! I assume the b'flies are sandwiched between 2 pieces of glass or plexiglass? Also you said real butterfly wings - so did you substitute something else for their bodies? Are these called suncatchers?

Hey Susan, Yes, they are sandwiched between two pieces of plexi-glass and I designed and cut out the paper bodies with the laser engraver. They are usually called suncatchers, but I wanted to be different so I called them butterfly dancers. I also made them with the body of a fairy and called them fairy dancers. Sold a ton of those at shows when we used to do them.

Yeah, I like butterfly dancers better too!! Do you have any pics of the fairies? I'd love to see them!! I never would have guess their bodies were paper, but of course that's the whole idea of using a laser engraver. I guess it might be kinda messy to try and smush their bodies between glass huh??? Ewwwww ;~)

just found a beautiful but expired :( Monarch on the floor of the greenhouse at work today and brought her home. You given me a great idea :) I think it was meant to be because how odd is it that I find this today? We NEVER get butterflies in the building at work!

good grief -- you don't still make them, do you? You don't kill these important pollinators to do this, do you?

NO GAIL, I DON'T KILL BUTTERFLIES. I purchase them from an insect dealer and these are all rejects. Butterflies are not captured and killed in the wild as they are imperfect specimens because of natural damage or damage done during capture. A butterfly will lay an average of 1000 eggs in her lifetime and only two eggs survive to adulthood out in the wild. In countries like New Guinea and Indonesia the indigenous people have been taught to raise butterflies where nearly 90% survive and half ...»
are released back into the wild thus repopulating the species. The butterfly farmers can then support their families instead of selling off rain forest land to developers so everyone wins. Each butterfly that is sold has to have a stamp on it showing who raised it, where is was raised, what sex it is and goes through the board of trade. So no worries Gail, you can breathe now...
