Yeah I had my doubts about that spot cause there is no current shade....But I am nursing a tree next to them trying to get it big enough to offer a little shade...BUT the Voles or something keeps eating the roots off and every year it's struggling...so I started injecting insecticide at the roots and it's doing MUCH better....

That Petrified Log came from our property in Miss. My hubby and youngest son brought it home from one of their trips to check on the place. The Shamrock was my Father in laws and one of his pride and joys...when he passed i planted it there and it has done wonderfully well...

So..........that's the key to happy hydrangeas? Peat? I'll have to try that.

Peet is acid and allows good drainage in that 10 ft diameter circle, (it might be smaller) I used about 1/3 original clay dirt, about 1/3 of "Garden topsoil" (Not the name brand stuff with fertilizer) and 2 Bales of peet. I dug it probably 3 feet deep. And fertilized when I planted them in spring of 2011. I wondered if the green and purple shamrocks would make it, and ditto the cinnamon fern...But the hydrangea comes out full and gives them shade at the critical hottest times and they seem ...»
to be doing great in that environment, like I said I water deep about every three days.

I'm trying to remember...It's pretty old....Let me think on it...I DID know the name....I have a Jackmanii on the other side but it never really gets any size to it because that wall gets too hot for it even with the oak tree partially shading it...I'll probably move it in the fall...

OK, I looked up the Varieties...and not sure this will help...BUT when I planted it, it said Nelly Moser....But in looking at the flowers it Looks more like Henri or James Mason...so at the time I didn't know what Nelly Moser was supposed to be...and I've always thought that was correct...LOL But Now I think it was Mismarked...I cut it back when it goes dormant cause otherwise it would take over the porch. But It's in a Huge Earthenware pot and has been for many years now....I give it ...»
Miracle Grow probably 2-3 times a summer and that's about it...Along with making sure the Pot Saucer stays full of water during the heat....

BTW:If anyone is planning on planting trumpetvine take this avice 1st. Yes it's beautiful and attracts Hummingbirds in the early morning hrs, however, it grows like weeds, takes over everything, will start growing in the middle of your yard from the roots and after a few years will stop blooming. Iso very hard to get rid of once you have it. Start with just a little growing over a fence or your pourch, I'm talking just one bunch. Whisteria, is much better and prettier.

Sharron W, your plants do look happy & very healthy. I didn't see one bad leaf. How do you accomplish that?

@Sherrie S. There are a few tips brown Now, BUT when I planned that area it was because my favorite Apricot Tree died...and it had been such a boon to have that shade as well as the apricots that I was devastated. So instead of cutting it down; I topped it and planted mini-ivy in some holes I drilled at the base of the stump. then I dug out the circle which sits below grade and back filled with that mix I talked about above...since the rest of the ground is a sort of clay it tends to hold ...»
the water in that peet mix long enough for the plants to drink deep before it's gone. Also in addition to the miracle grow 3-4 times a summer, I break evergreen tree stakes in half and throw them in the plants twice a year...in the fall and in early spring...the hydrangea benifits most from the fall addition, but the rest of them benifit from the spring addition. Part of the plan however was to use the "topped" dead tree to support my "last years" umbrella. It offers afternoon shade to the ferns and a little to the hydrangea and especially to my hummingbird feeder...

I love that you used the stump as an umbrella holder! That umbrella should never blow over.

Teresa D I posted a picture of the redwood, it's difficult to tell with the grass in the background, but the tree has a very primitive looking form and it's very distinctive. I get a lot of comments on it and it's really my favorite.
