Cleaning & Organization Craft Room & Workspaces Storage & Shelving

A DIY Sewing Room

When I remodeled my sewing room to make it more efficient, a lot of DIY work went into it and not a lot of money. All the furniture and storage in the room was either reused, repurposed or rearranged.

What had previously been my cutting table, became a wall to wall desk for my computer and sewing machines. It is a hollow core door. In order to use it as a desk, my husband cut it down the center, reinforced it with some wood supports in the hollow area, and secured it to the wall with wood cleats. The front is supported on legs fashioned from plumbing pipe.

You can read about more of the changes we made on my blog. http://creativelittledaisy.typepad.com/creat...

MDF shelves provide lots of easy access storage. The tissue paper pompoms help soften and add some pretty to the utilitarian space.

I took my old desk apart, turned it upside down and added casters. It now slides under the long desk but is easily pulled out to access the back of the computer's cpu.

I'm getting ready to transform my dining room into a multipurpose space where I can sew. I love your ideas. You gave me tons of inspiration. Now I just need to get motivated.

Very nice room. Airy, spacious, sunny. Very condusive for working in. I am working on organizing my own craft room as after we moved a few years ago a lot of stuff got crammed in there. Plus after helping 5 children through 4H projects I have a lot of remnant materials I will no longer need and need to donate them to others so I can narrow my room down to just the things I want to work on.

Thanks everyone! Jan, I love your sewing space. Karen, I used to have my sewing room in my dining room. I took over my son's room when he joined the Marines.

Mary, if you google tissue paper pompoms there are several tutorials, the one I used was from Martha Stewart.

LOVE THIS! My sewing area is spread out in the basement...only problem-natural light is so much better-especially with aging eyes!!

Rainy, my husband is a bit of a perfectionist too and if there is anything not level or balanced, he will notice it right away. I just try to use his talent and perfectionism to my benefit. He takes over if he thinks I'm not doing it right. I have found that the more I do, the better I get and he actually asks my opinion about how to do things sometimes. Don't be afraid to fail when it comes to DIY, just don't start on any family heirlooms. Buy thrift store items to practice you skills on. Just be careful, it's addictive.

Love the organization (especially the thread storage) What size is the room? I'm getting ready to move into newer larger studio, and would love ideas for layout.

love it! I lost my sewing room when we moved 12 yrs ago from a new house to an old farm house. My husband had made me an awesome oak cabinet for all my material with a drawer for patterns, I had to sell as no room for it. I think I will reorganize my house and move my spare room upstairs and take over the 11x17 spare room once my son goes to school next week Who cares if guests are cramped. LOL Love the thread board. I will be doing that for sure. get all the tub things off the floor looks so organized using all the wall space

I love your space. I just finished mine too. It's a lot smaller, 9 X 9, so I'll have to come up with something for cutting out patterns other than the floor. I did have to give up my idea for a reading nook but I can use the widow seat in the guest bedroom if I really need to get away.

I have in the past, Kelly used a light weight aluminum folding table for my cutting out, It folds up flat against a wall, or under something else.

Linda Stroney , I've been looking for exactly that because my Grandma used one too! I've found the plastic folding ones but the light ones are flimsy and shaky and the sturdy ones are fairly heavy for a "portable" table.

I can't remember exactly where i bought that one, I'll have to ask my husband.

Have you looked on line? amazon, Ikea, ebay? Keep looking, you may find one at a garage sale even...

I've checked on line several sites and they were all the plastic ones. I hit the thrift stores every weekend. I haven't given up yet. Meantime I'll just crawl around on the floor to make my shower curtain.

Kelly.. know that's hard, I've done it before, and with my customers, if I have to pin a hem, I get on the floor, at my age it's not as easy to do that. For cutting out things, I have used a cardboard cutting board on my bed. Not perfect, but it was off the floor..

Use the bed, what a great idea! . I'm going to sew old (& not so old) ladie's handkerchiefs to some of my great-grandmmother's sheers. I've been collecting hankies for a couple of years for this project. It's the perfect size for a shower curtain and I can lay them out and move them around to get the design I want before I start sewing. Thank you for the idea.

Kelly I found someone on Etsy, that takes those vintage hankies and prints a Greeting card of an old fashioned girl or lady, then she attaches the hankie in a way to make it look like her dress, it's the cutest thing I've ever seen.

and My Granddaughter sewed those bigger handkerchiefs together to make a bedroom curtain, it looks nice. You need to show yours when you get it done.

Kelly,I have a large counter top in my kitchen that I have used in the past for cutting out large items, and then it is not so hard on the knees or the back!
