I have done this and it is such a nice addition to your porch or patio. But fair warning make sure you use a heavy glass top so if or when you have heavy rain and or winds, It won't blow the top off, plus will keep critters out. I used two large clay pots inverted the bottom one upside down. Used heavy cement glue and let dry a couple days then painted it with terra cotta paint to match my decor. My sister used bird bath and put a glass top on it. If you are like me, you need the initial idea then the wheels start to turn. So have fun.

I have a large terracotta pot on my patio with a round rock embedded cement stepping stone on top. Necessity is the mother of invention! I like the glass over sand and shells even better!

Great idea. I did a similar thing when I had a beach house in Va. Beach at 74th Street years ago. Love it!!

i THINK IT WOULD BE CUTE TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS AND THEN COVER IT WITH PLEXIGLAS , SO OUR TEXAS WIND WOULD NOT HAVE IT ALL OVER THE PORCH. YOU COULD DO WHAT EVER THEME YOU WANTED UNDER THE GLASS STILL.

Is the glass adhered in any way? I would be afraid of a topple over and having sand all over the yard, we have dogs. was also thinking to use 2 pots, with the bases touching, to make it a bit higher

Elke- no, the glass is resting on flat topped rubber bumpers, the kind you use for cabinets. They actually form quite a bit of suction to the glass. It's been through 3 very large storms here this summer with winds over 50mph and it was just fine. Now of course if a hurricane comes our way, it will be moved inside.;)

love it. i used half filled cement in a lg container for umbrella for shade to sit under that umbrella. I put 4 roller coasters under it to move around and locked roller coaster to stay in one position. i posted that couple months ago.

you could add "peanuts" to take up some of the sand space to make it lighter and save on sand!
