  • I found the best way to clean a stove top is with baking soda! Sprinkle baking soda everywhere, then take a large tea towel and soak it in boiling hot water, (wear gloves!) squeeze it out then lay on top of the soda powder, leave for 10 mins. You may need to do this a few times but it makes it much easier than scrubbing it! Good luck :)

Well I just read somewhere that to clean oil off is with oil. I know, maybe try some liquid vegt. Oil on and old rag or some Crisco. Rug an area an see what happens. Hey, may work and alot of elbow grease.lol good luck

A lot depends on what your stove-top is made of. Mine's enamel and I treat it with care. I haven't tried desert rose's baking soda method or Barbara's oil, neither of which would hurt the enamel, but I swear by Dawn's Power Dissolver on my oven racks. Spray it on, let it sit, wipe off. Works a dream. Maybe it would serve as well on your stove-top,

If it's enamel, you can remove all the drip rings and grids and liberally apply Easy-Off oven cleaner, then cover it with plastic wrap. Put the plastic wrap directly onto the oven cleaner-coated surface. If you can, leave it like this overnight. The next morning you should be able to wipe off the worst of the build-up. I've done this successfully with several, what I thought were hopeless, stove tops and enamel and glass cookware. If you are hesitant about spraying the oven cleaner directly onto the stove top, spray it into a deep bowl and liberally brush it on. You should obtain the same end result. Doing it this way doesn't scratch the surface and you don't have to exert tons of heavy arm-wrenching scrubbing.

@Swan Road Designs Thanks! I'll try this. I have a small amount of build-up around the burners and would like to avoid it getting worse.

Don't know what material your stove top is made of, but if it's metal or enamel you could try a product called Krud Kutter...it's great for cutting through grease, just rinse well after using. If it is glass and it's really burned on there isn't a lot of hope to restore it to a like new condition. You can try baking soda or other products made especially for glass tops to make it look a little better. If you are patient and careful, you can also scrape some burned on debris off of glass tops very SLOWLY. You still may scratch the glass surface but it will take off a lot of the crud.
